I have noticed references to people converting AKs and APs to commerce raiders.
I cannot find this designation or where this is done?
What am I missing?

I saw some refer to the term as 'commerce raiders'

Well, then they were misinformed. The purpose of a Q-ship is to fight submarines...

Q-ships can also take on a true commerce raider in the hopes that they damage it and save the remainder of the convoy. Of course, a commerce raider will be more of a match for a Q-ship. But, it's still better to lose one Q-ship than 6 AK's.

Okay, but how do you do the conversions and where?

Same as in WitP: Osaka/Kobe or Mare Island. Standard large AK-to-whatever conversion.

Mare Island, huh. I haven't had time to read the manual. I looked for the conversion in one of the US ports but It wasn't that one . Thanks

Aks can be converted to BOTH Q ships and Commerce raiders. The commerce raider conversion is "Qship (ML)" (from way back when). The Q ship retains the AK designation, whereas a commerce raider in effect becomes a cheap (and lightly armed) cruiser. Commerce Raiders/Auxilliary Cruisers are for hunting down Q ships, AKs, APs, and smaller craft, Q ships are for bashing submarines.

That is what it was, but I decided to beef it up into a raider.
