recomendations please

I would like to play two PBEM games sometime in the near future, when the 1.8 patch is available. I want to play one as Japan and one as Allies. I am wondering whether I should use Niks mod 4.2 or CHS 1.06. I know both mods try to address corrections for the stock senarios. Is one better than the other for better balanced play? I want to have fun, winning is not important when playing either side, the playing - matching my wits against another human - is what is fun (the AI is stupid in the extreme).

Depending on what "near future" means, and the luck of work in progress being ready for testing, you may have more choices. There is going to be a release of CHS that may incorporate Nicks mod, or other things intended to help air combat. It will correct a number of problems in any case. And immediately after that there will be a release of RHS - a variation that will include reform of identified errors too sweeping for sufficient review to be included in CHS this time around. This will include a serious attempt to deal with ship ranges, ship armor, etc. IF you don't want to wait for these releases, you are well advised to go with CHS - because the map is an order of magnitude more accurate (I will send you a data analysis if you like) and a number of OB things have been fixed in it.

CHS is my personal preference, but I have converted Nik's mod scenario for use with my (non-extended) map. See the scenarios page at my website (link in sig) for details.
