Noob seeks editor use tips.

I wish to add some "what if" ships into the game, including carriers...
Is there a guide on using the editor? (I am not at home with my manual, please forgive.)
If not, can someone provide pointers on how to add ships (including squadrons for carriers) to a scenario.
What slots are available to add stuff, and so on. I won't be adding any new aircraft types (at this time).
Are some slots for CV capable squadrons?
Do I need to add a pilots roster, or will the game randomly put pilots from the pool in there?
What are the common pitfalls of modding to avoid?

No.
What slots are available to add stuff, and so on. I won't be adding any new aircraft types (at this time).
It goes like
this:
DO NOT MODIFY/REMOVE Slots 197, 213, 236-256, 518-526
Allied Devices
ONLY in Slots 137, 138, 315-517
Japanese Devices
ONLY in Slots 139, 237-249, 255-314
Japanese Ship Classes
ONLY in Slots 1-171 and 501-1199
Allied Ship Classes
ONLY in Slots 172-499 and 1200-1999
Japanese Ships
ONLY in Slots 1-2999
Allied Ships
ONLY in Slots 3000-9999
Japanese Aircraft Types
ONLY in Slots 1-75 (CV-capable in Slots 1-7 and 15-23)
Allied Aircraft Types
ONLY in Slots 76-249 (CV-capable in Slots 77-101)
Are some slots for CV capable squadrons?
No (see above); a CV capable squadron is one that flies a carrier capable aircraft
and comes into play assigned to a particular CV. A carrier trained squadron flies a carrier capable aircraft but is
not assigned to a CV.
Do I need to add a pilots roster, or will the game randomly put pilots from the pool in there?
No and yes.
What are the common pitfalls of modding to avoid?
Oh Brudda, there's so many... A common (and very annoying) mistake is to break the Class Upgrade Paths. Every ship in the Classes list can have an upgrade scheduled for later in the war, tied to a specific Class Slot (i.e. Class Slot 100 upgrades to Slot 500). If you're not careful when inserting new classes, those upgrade paths can break, so that a battleship "up"grades to an AK. The program doesn't know any better...

The first lesson of modding is NEVER use INSERT or DELETE in the editor when updating records. Rather use COPY and PASTE in place of INSERT, and use copy/paste of a blank slot to delete one.
As Terminus says, links between things different items will be totally warped.[:@]
It also helps to use some tool or other (witpchk/WitpExcel/etc) to check the integrity of the changes to ensure that links between items have not been broken.

I will try to ask my questions in this thread:
Which slot should be reserved for Nuke bombing group?
How program is recognizing which group is a replacement type (VR's on CVE) and which not? Also specific slot numbers?

The 393rd NBS (Nuclear Bombardment Squadron) is hardwired into slot 1620.
Not sure I understand your second question...[&:]

Well, as I heard some air groups - some of those on CVE's - are replenishment air groups (VR). They dont fly missions, and are used only to replenish airgroups on other carriers. So some of the airgroups are acting differently than other.
So my question is: What made those groups acting like this? It is slot related? Or maybe some other parameter?

Thanks Terminus! Thanks michaelm! Those are exactly the tips I need to know before delving into the world of WiTP modding!
At this point, I was just thinking of adding the USS Ranger (CV4) with her historical dec 7 air group into the game.
See thread
tm.asp?m=994449.
I served on USS Ranger (CV61) in the '80's, and I wanted to see the namesake in WiTP.
Are you whining? THERE'S NO WHINING IN WITP!!!
I browse the Matrix Forums and the World of Warcraft forums during the slow moments at work. You wanna see flaming and whining? Go check out those (WoW) boards...

Hi
from what I can gather, it appears that if the group is a WING and on a CVE and in a RepTF, it will act as a supply of planes to a CV group.
I created a slot elsewhere in the air group database and gave the group a funny name. Put in on a USN CVE and in RepTF.
It resupplied a CV group with planes when in range.
Changing the air group from a wing to a squadron stopped it from replenishing the CV.

Well, there you have it! Make it a wing and assign to a CVE, and presto!
