When using 'basic supply' (i.e. advance supply is unchecked), how do you know how much surplus supply you currently have, or how much you're lacking and should build? Or which units are not supplied? At the moment, it's pure guesswork for me.

Basic supply all units are in supply as long as you have any supply. If you have supply, it is stored somewhere in hyperspace where it is instantly available to all units.
You can see how much supply you have left by
(1) looking at the Military Forces Screen (F3, or the helmet button on the top),
(2) going to move a unit, and observing the supply count at the top of the unit movement toolbar that pops up,
(3) looking at the Repair Screen (F8, or the gear and wrench button on the top)
But really, go to Advanced Supply and turn off both Area Supply and Auto Supply. It's not that hard to move the supplies yourself, and it is much less confusing and frustrating than letting the computer do it with Auto or Area Supply.
The supply rules are part of what make the game great, and you'll quickly get the hang of it.

I couldn't agree more. I too played on simple supply against the AI when I first got the game & was a bit apprehensive about switching to advanced. In my first PBEM game, also my first game using advanced supply I discovered the following:
- You have not really invaded Russia, until you have invaded Russia with advanced supply on. Advanced supply forces you to plan in advance or suffer the consequences
- Advanced supply opens up a whole new set of possibilities. You can for instance encircle units, cutting off their supply & effectively disabling them
- The way in which you manage supply may not make or break you, but it can be a real asset

While I agree with Wandering and Svend I still suggest playing with simply supply for the first game or three against the AI. I certainly did.
The learning curve in WaW is a bit steep in my experience so having one less thing to worry about initially can be a good idea. After you feel you have a reasonable idea about the basic rules though I definitely suggest switching to advanced supply.
