What am I doing wrong?

I've never played SP before, but couldn't pass up the chance to give it a try. I'm sure enjoying things so far.
The other night I tried to play a scenario with a rather large number of units. I figured it would be easiest to do movement by formation. I selected the formation leader, then hit 'a' to select the entire formation. Then I tried to click somewhere to indicate where they should move. Nothing happened. Command and Control is off. The manual seems to indicate that I'm doing things correctly. Any suggestions? I cringe at the thought of moving each unit individually in these larger battles...
