Did I just completely miss it, or is there not a legend for what the different symbols mean on the relation's portion of the diplomacy advisor menu? I've gone through the manual several times and can't seem to find what the stuff means.

Oh sure, I can make safe assumptions for several of the symbols, but what is the overall context?

Okay, so, in the absence of an answer, what is left to me is speculation.

In the nation relation's window of the Diplomacy advisor screen, it seems fairly obvious to me that the crossed swords symbol means the two countries are at war.

The red, open mouthed face, means the one country really really doesn't like the othe country.

The bright yellow face means the one country likes the other country alot. However, this doesn't prevent the former from DOWing the latter.

Does the yellowing triangle with the point up mean the relationship got better last turn?

Does the orangish shield for a minor mean the country has a protectorate over the minor?

Why is it that I tend to be attacked by me so-called yellow faced "friends" far more often than I do by my angry red "enemies"?

What does it mean when a nation has a yellow face for me one turn, but the next turn there's no face at all in the indicator box?

Does each degree of change have an effect on their willingness to trade/treaty with me, or is it only supposed to show the progression to each extreme, where at each extreme is when action takes place?

Yup

Yup.

Nope, the yellow triangle indicates an Alliance.

Does the orangish shield for a minor mean the country has a protectorate over the minor?

Many reasons...could be you are "top dog" (ie, all Europe is alarmed at your growth), or they DOW to satisfy treaty obligations (ie, defense pacts). Or due to an ultimatum...like I said lots of reasons. I think the "likey/not likey" faces are more indicative of how receptive a country will be to trade offers and other treaties...DOWs happen more for balance of power and treaty reasons in this game, in my observations.

What does it mean when a nation has a yellow face for me one turn, but the next turn there's no face at all in the indicator box?
You may have had a diplomat adjacent, who fed you the likey/not likey face info...then you moved him away, and hence lost access to that info. You only get facey info for those countries you have an adjacent diplomat postitioned.

Does each degree of change have an effect on their willingness to trade/treaty with me, or is it only supposed to show the progression to each extreme, where at each extreme is when action takes place?

I'm guessing it is the former.
