what is the aim of the japanese in the different scenarios, apart from producing a lot of scrap metal? Do you need the SRA? Is there a form of automatic victory like a 4:1 score or the like?

The aim for both sides is purely VPs. Certain areas will yield far more VPs than others, such as the PI yielding more than the SRA, which yield more than China.
There is no auto victory, as I and the betas felt that the feature was largely ignored in WitP, and was not needed. (Basically, if you have destroyed his army and navy, you can consider that the automatic victory).

Japan will produce enough supply & fuel locally so they dont need the SRA right?

The SRA can help augment the supply and fuel. Japan produces enough that there is always fuel and supply. BUT, you may have to stockpile for a few months before launching an invasion. Supply and fuel captured from the PI, SRA, or elsewhere could help ease potential problems, but isn't a complete necessity.
