On the detailed battle board my units are usually start grouped in the middle and if I can't see any enemy units. How do I know what general direction they are coming from?
Does the little Napoleonic "N" in blue have any signifigance?

you are normally set up faceing the bad guys (which can be odd as some times you face every which way)
but over all, you are faceing them and your back is closer to "your" edge of the map
(if and when able, rush forward a Cav unit, hopefully to a hilltop, to get a better view, as you are not always lined up with them and they will start trying to flank you as soon as they start to move)

Fog of war my friend. Put out some skirmishers to shield your line and put out some cavarly to locate the enemy. Don't forget to protect your artillery and supply.

One army is set up roughly in the SW side of the map and the other in the NE side of the map.
