Nice to see that the IJN subs were as usless in real life as they are in my game. Aside from scouting and the occasional lucky shot all they do is get sunk.

Subs are worth as much as their weight
without glen equipped subs I'd not score over a hundred of ships in a short time
it is middle April 42 and I lost only one sub
there is little us of RO class and obviously their production can or even should be halted
with medium range used as early warning perimeter on defensive position but I usually halt them too and use existing ones
and long legged glen equipped can stress allied player in whole 42 and allow to score many ships

all is a matter of doctrine
I don't try to prove myself that subs can inflict serious losses to allied fleet

They wern't useless in real life......just badly mis-managed for the most part. A good book i'd recommend on the subject is: The Japanese Submarine Force and World War II by Carl Boyd and Akihiko Yoshida.

Technically speaking, the Japanese fleet submarines were excellent, and their sailors were second to none in training. It was, as Nik points out, the "attack-only-large-warships-doctrine" that neutered them.

Very few.....Combined Fleet never learned from it's war experiences (vs. the American experience) and continued to fretter away it's subs on dangerous supply missions or running them around chasing one contact or another reducing their chances to score. By late war Allied ASW was deadly. USS England's famous 'hunt' was a combination of improved ASW and the inflexibility of current sub doctrine. (radio silence and rigid patrol lines) allowing the ship to go pick off each sub without warning. The book I mentioned is an exercise in frustration at the inflexibility and stupidity of CF's handling of it's sub force.

Sixth fleet and it's men paid a very steep price comprable if not greater than that of the Uboat arm. Ironically Japan's last major succcess (IIRC here at work) was by submarine when an Iboat sank the CA Indianapolis after her delivery of the atomic bomb.

IJN submarines participating in the Pearl Harbor operation were the ONLY naval forces to locate, engage, and hit an enemy aircraft carrier! See Advance Force Pearl Harbor.

IJN submarines scored rather often in 1942, and even sank aircraft carriers. While I admit that the torpedoes which hit a battleship and sank a destroyer on the occasion USS Wasp was lost were lucky hits, the four fish put into the carrier were clearly anything but an accident!

IJN submarines were the most successful link with Eurpoean Axis nations. I 8 brought Chandra Bose back, to head the Indian National Army. US Army intelligence reports one IJN submarine managed a round trip to Germany in only two months in 1945. And it is certain they participated in intel ops we do not understand. A "recon type kaiten" was found on a beach in Panama in Aug 1945. Note NO REFERENCE even admits a "recon type kaiten" was ever built! Yet this particular sub was on display at the military museum on Ohau for years, and today is in a museum you may visit in Japan. Few know that IJN submarines went as far as Germany and Panama in 1945 - and no one knows what they were doing there with boats able to carry hundreds of kg of cargo? But I bet it wasn't nothing.

IJN submarines are credited with running a good campaign against merchant ships in the INdian Ocean.

Odd. It was the MOST effective sub for actual operations. And Glens are misrepresented in WITP - they cannot fly in most sea states - and mostly are lost if they do fly - since they can't find the sub again - mostly.

People who played UV against me said I used subs "like SSNs." Handled right they can be devastating.
