I was playing a game and everytime my troops became suppressed and retreated, they went the wrong way! straight towards the enemy lines. I was using a saved map but it has happened before.

Check the retreat hexes. <-- Flags that have letters 'RT' on them. They may be on the wrong ends of the map. If so, you can change them in the editor.

That's something you always have to watch out for with custom maps, or if you're playing a game that is 'unusual' (I'm currently playing a US Army v UK PBEM battle in 1941). The game doesn't seem to know what to do with that, and puts the retreat / reinforcement hexes on the wrong side of the map.

You'll need to go into the EDITOR, set the nations and dates and then swap the sides (e.g. GERMANY ON THE LEFT) in the EDIT MAP screen, even if they appear correct at first. Make sure you save the map with a different file name so that it's easy to fix any mistakes.

There's more to it than this, but you should be able to figure it out (if I can, anyone can). [;)]

Retreating INTO the enemy -- man, we've all experienced it, but I don't think it needs to be fixed. Once the survivors of a close assault or barrage get " spooked" and panic, God only knows which direction they will run. If it happens to be in the direction of the enemy, let's just assume they decide to surrender, or as often in he case of the Japanese, they either charge into the enemy's guns or commit suicide. It's ugly and horrible, but it happened.

[:D] No problem, I've scouted out the same info from these pages or from the Depot. [;)]

I think what you're describing is an occasional thing that happens (it's not a bug, it's a feature) during the game. Sometimes a routed unit will just run wildly in the wrong direction.

What Brador was describing seems to be the other option - the retreat hexes on a custom map were reversed.

I don't think that happens very often on random generated maps (such as the ones found in a WWII long campaign), but it often happens on user created maps.

My wife has this samed problem in wow that we play on the internet. Sometimes we get overwhelmed with the bad monsters and have to run. Invaribly she runs into more enemys. She never runs the safe path to get away. I get the impression she just throws her hands up over her head and runs sort of like the woman in bonnie and clyde did. Screamin like a banshee and just runnin like an idiot in fear. This is the impression I get when they run towards and not away from the line of advancing hordes.
