Can large ships spin on their own axis to present an more protected side??
Whats the largest fleet anyone has tried in battle?

Largest Fleet: Well I created a test mission where I have 12 Fighters start on an attack run. Each fighter respawns between 5-10 times each. Their Targets are three Destroyer types, two troop carriers and one Carrier. With no issues what so ever. The end goal I am going to be trying is to have in excess of 200 fighters in the mission with out respawns and a fairly decent sized fleet on the other side as well.
What it boils down to is Computer, Memory and Vid-Card Processing speed vs number of polys on the screen at one time. In all my test mission above has over 43,600 polys on the screen at one time, if no one is firing.

they can not spin on there +/- X Axis while traveling Z. What I think you are referring to is almost an barrel roll that a performance fighter can do.
Unless you mod your ships to be fighters/shuttles/LCA's. Then the programing will allow you to do barrel rolls.

Hmmmm, one of the major tactics that star wars CAP ships use is the slow barrel roll to show an undamaged flank
THats a shame

You have to put capital ships into manual command mode first because there's no way to get the to do rolls with the helm active.

But since there is no such thing as a "damaged flank" it's rather pointless to implement the AI doing rolls

You can do them manually yourself if you need the feeling.

Adonnay, Are you telling me that starshatter ships do not have targettable subsystems and do not take damage to particular areas?
Is this game just a GREEN BAR to measure damage style game?
I mean after all the excellent attention to realism with newtonian physics are you telling me their is no competent damage model for ships??

Well there are subsystems that can be destroyed but most ships are pretty cylinder like and you can shoot the reactor from all sides, same with the engines. The actual "hitpoints"/hull integrity of a ship is pretty much realized with a green health bar (like almost(?) every other space sim out there mind you)
If there are ships with a totally different design (i.e. where the systems are not centered) then your tactic might become necessary.

are the subsytems targettable -
I agree most are green bar based but the targettable systems make a huge difference to tactics
and a lot of space sims out their do have targettable subsystems - even star wars empires has this feature
Or how about Nexus? YOu can disable anything you like
Or how about homeworld - t also has targettable subsystems
Does Starshatter compare to these combat wise? OR is it the first guy with the biggest ship wins

Well... there are targetable subsystems and the one with the biggest ship usually wins because he gets the subsystems faster down *g*.
At least that is my experience... on most ships its quite hard to hit vital systems like shields or reactor since the shield prevents most damage. It is however possible to knock out turrets or lasercannons. Disabling those should give you quite an advantage.

You know, this might still be a neat to impliment. Not for the sake of protecting a system, but what about to bring different guns to bear.
I was modelling my fleet (see in the Modding forum) and i realized that more guns can be brought to bear if they enemy is above or below the ship. So i thought, why not be able to rotate so that you can maintain a flyby and bring different arcs to bear...

You _can_ rotate the ship. Only the AI doesn't do it

thats cool, esp if weapons are recharging
kinda like the old age of sale change broadsides

There is still FLCS turned on. FLCS off could be available in version 4.5 but I don't know for sure becouse I'm fighter pilot.
[edit]
FLCS = FLight Control System
It adjusts movement so that ship is moving where nose is pointed.
