Please no "Bridge Wired Info" displayed

I was reading through a discussion between "Beery", "Mark Shot" and a few others on the status of the bridge information displayed (in an HTTR AAR). And I think it is time to revisit it for COTA.

I played HTTR before reading any of the forum commentary on the game. And the first time I saw that I, as the allies would be shown that a bridge is wired or not and even be shown if the Germans were trying to blow it and then failing or not, resulting in them having to start the process over, I was disappointed about this feature. I was very let down, and thought...now that is just too bad.

Why should I know this? AND in multiplayer...why should my opponent know this? I would be rather upset to be playing multiplayer and know that if I failed to blow a bridge, that my opponent would instantly know, and could then charge it. Can we not conceal the status of the bridge explosives?

The discussion I am referring to between MARK SHOT and BEERY then went into whether players should even know what the VP status is.

Look, I think that bridge status and VP status are two differnt things and can be argued separately.

Knowing the wiring status of a bridge is really waaaay too bad in a game which has gone to such lengths to increase tension by giving us limited AI of enemy activity. My behavior is completely changed if I know for sure the bridge is wired or not. And I tell you what. If I know they tried to blow it, and failed, well...then it COMPLETELY CHANGES...because I know if Ican get it fast--before they can reprime, then I am safe. So an all out effort is immediately made.

I just don't like this in a game which has worked so hard to make it feel more like war. Maybe I just don't like knowing this in single player vs AI mode. But I really kind of hate having my enemy know it for multi player. No point to it.

Could we please turn this knowledge off for COTA?

Of course, we could also issue orders for bridges...like "blow when threatened." "Blow only when in HUGE trouble." "Never blow". Sure it may lead to short term tactical gains, but in their infinite optimisim, our leaders won't be happy with us for having blown bridges required for counter offensives, and we could or should be penalized for this. This last paragraph could be expanded on greatly, but for now I want to keep this centered on the simple matter of whether this information should be shown or not.

As it stands now, the following previously discussed FOW enhancement items have not changed in COTA from HTTR. These are:

(1) The presence of the WinMeter.

(2) The status updates on VLs.

(3) The primed status of crossings.

I believe all of these are on Dave's wishlist. PG may be in short supply of a few things, but a populated wishlist is not one of them.

Personally, I would like to see configuration options to enable or disable the above. Since they are implemented already, it would probably be best to make them available to those who want them or to new players who might need them.

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions!

Yes it's interesting how, we mere mortals just nod sagely and utter wise sounding mmms when Markshot holds forth.
Many people go to the fountain Mark, but do we drink ... well yes, quite a lot realy! But that's another subject.

Now, that we got out the PDF version of the mini-guides, it's hard to tell how much activity this stuff is seeing since there are no page views. I suppose we could get an FTP fetch count from Matrix to find out.
