What determines the initial morale rating of a freshly-constructed unit? It appears to vary depending on province and unit type -- how does this work?

Barracks as well as the age of the recruits and the time spent training them. The barracks are changed per province the other settings are changed on the Economic adviser screen. I think the best you can get is to set your Min Age to 21, your Max age to 30 and months training to 20.

Cyrano, it appears that the "draft morale" only effects replacements, not initial unit builds, which vary in morale by province and unit type. In the game I'm playing at present, Infantry generated in Besserabia, e.g., will start with a 5.7 morale, whereas infantry generated in Constantinople will start with a 3.7 morale. My draft morale is 4.7, so obviously something more is going on here -- and, incidentally, Constantinople's barracks is larger than Besserabia's.

Nice try, but I think not. According to Ralegh's cheat sheets, provinces have a base morale, and sure enough Besserabia's is 5 while Constantinople's is only 3.5. So the question really is, where is this "base morale" in the data base? It isn't in any of the scenario files.

greetings, i think is the base morale for the nation given in the "players2.txt" in the /data folder, much of the provinces are "players" for this file and have his own morale base rating listed in the file, say you build a infantry in a Home province from france and his base morale is 6.0, each barracks level gives a 0.1 bonus (i think), so with level 5 barracks, in a home province for france you will have a infantry with 6.5 morale, so works for now i think, and a side note, if you allow me, please do not give a nation, major o minor in the players2.txt a base morale more than 6.9 (and this is very much too), if you give a nation a base morale of 7.0, the home provinces of that nation with barracks level at 10 will make infantry units that start at guards status when builded in that province,
with my best regards,
Murat30.

By golly, you've got it, Murat! Silly me... of course, a major country (with one base morale) might well have conquered provinces of a minor country (with their own base morale), and thus the variation. So any units built in a major's "home" provinces will have the major's base morale, but units built in a conquered province will have the minor's base morale. How... elegant. And it should lead one to try to optimize his builds.

This is why I pick two or maybe a third province to focus on improving barracks and only build units there. I was doing the right thing just did not understand the mechanics behind it. Thanks for this thread.
