.......that is my question [:)]

I really want to get involved in this series of games and seek your advice on whether to purchase HTTR today or wait for the release of COTA.

Two points -I can't wait long (i.e. longer than a week - I'm desperate [:D]) and I only have the budget for one, so please no one suggest I buy both [:'(].

So, what should I do?

Eek, difficult question. Ordinarily I might say wait for CotA, but it's release has been somewhat delayed. I have no inside knowledge whatsoever, but I'd say there's no chance it will be released in a week. Even it it went gold today, I doubt it'd be released for 2-3 weeks after that.

CotA undoubtedly sounds like a better game than HttR but HttR still has all the components that, imo, make the series truely great.

So, if your timescale is a week I reckon HttR is the only choice, and one you'll be happy with.

That should keep you busy for a few months at the very least and then (cautiously assuming CotA will be released by then) maybe your budget will be good to get that too. In the long term both will definitely be worth owning.

Maybe others will have different advice [;)]

I have more or less decided to buy HttR after reading some of the mini-guide and tutorials .

As you say, CotA hasn't even gone yet and I am desperate to play. I will certainly have the cash to buy CotA soon so there's nothing to stop me getting HttR now! [8D]

So, I'm off to grab a beer and purchase HttR. [:D]

The name actually came from a few years back when I experimented with growing radishes in a corner of my grandad's garden (this was when I was 17) - someone called me the great radish and it stuck in my mind.

That reminds me of my reaction the first time I played HttR [:)]

How did you find out about the game?

I found it because I was getting sick of bad AI in games, and the lazy excuses for the fact that it was so poor. I typed 'wargame best ai' into google and got a lot of hits on HttR. After following some of the links I'd seen enough to know I had to buy it.

Well, the AI is part of it, definitely. Myself and the friends I mentioned are big table-top players. Hell, we played morning, noon and night at high school and university. But now we've all gone our seperate ways and have full-time jobs I have been playing solitaire for a while and so many games offer a great concept but a woeful AI. With HttR (and CotA, by the looks of it) you get both.

Also, I'm a grand strategy fan and a committed HoI2 player but I've been after something more which is operational in nature for some time and now I've found it. I read a alot of military history books and wanted a pc game where I could take control in individual battles as opposed to the whole war.

Finally, I think that what made the final decision for me was the fact that there are no hexes!. I looked at BiN and BiI and, sure, they looked appealing and are good games in their own right but the engine in HttR is tops!

I'm a big fan of HoI2 as well, and the Steel Panthers games. I got used to playing either squad battles, fighting for farm houses and country roads, or planning the entire war in HoI

HttR took a bit of getting used to in this respect, being scaled somewhat in the middle.. but it feels nice to get command of (in many scenario's) a complete division. It helped me understand the way a division would operate, how the various parts made up the whole, etc.

What I love most about HttR is the way you only order the commanding unit, and it creates it's own plans with it's sub units. It gives a great feel for what a real commander would be doing.

Glad to hear about your decision to support the development of the Mother of All Operational Level WWII Games!

Yes it's a great game. And yes it is everything a board gamer dreams of. But because it has the power to suck you in totally, you may rather quickly realize some things it is missing, which it desperately needs. Like coordinated attacks. And a few other things.

And because you will grow to love this game within five to ten minutes of having installed it, these problems can be painful, because we are so close to having a "perfect" game here...but yet a little far.

But be patient and EVEN GREATER gaming experiences are waiting for us around the corner from Panther. I am convinced of it! I know I am sticking around and will continue to buy and mention it to my friends.

This thread is funny, it's like history repeating itself to me.

I was faced with exactly the same situation with RDOA vs waiting for HTTR to release.

Couldn't wait and bought RDOA then HTTR immediately when it came out.

I sound just like you ... same reaction and everything! [:D]
