I'm going to start doing things like this, covering ships, weapons, and famous military people from about 1898-1930 (the WPO time Frame basically). So first up, what is this: I will accept two potential answers.

Looks a bit like a 81mm Brandt Mortar 1927/1931 but it must be a derivative of it rather than the original...

EDIT
I can't find anything with the same base, the Brandt isn't particularly similar.
If it is from the 1898-1930 period, it at least eliminates a lot of alternatives...
The Chinese I think only came up with the Type 20 in 1931...
Soviets used round bases AFAIK

Well, if it's a Brandt, then that would explain why Tanker said he'd accept two different answers. I'm sure the Japanese license produced it; everybody else did...

Pretty sure it isn't Japanese, it is not a Type 11 (introduced in 1922). The only other Japanese mortars I have found info on are from 1935 and onwards...

I think the two replies are:

As Terminus states: 3 inch Stokes Mortar

and the US produced it and called it 3 inch trench mortar Mark 1.

The image is a bit weird though, nearly all the images I could find of the Stokes Mortar have a completely different base plate.
