Protectorate creation

How do I create a protectorate out of a province that is now considered part of my homeland?
I am playing as France and have conquered Westphalia and a number of other small countries and I want to change them into protectorates.
If I "liberate" Westphalia will it automatically become my protectorate? Or, will it revert to a Prussian one?

Logic suggests that if you free a country you should get a public relations "bounce" with them. Why not give this experiment a try:
Through the diplomacy screen, relationships check the "number" that country has towards you (presumably it will show). Save. Liberate Westphalia and immediately note what that number is and use a diplomat to pull up the "pie" screen and see how you are doing.
We'd all be interested in your findings.

Already tried that. Doesn't work. Most of the time they have a bitter resentment for whatever hapenned during the occupation, and it doesn't fade away easily. The most probable scenario is you free them and a couple of month later you have a Swedish protectorate in your backyard. In my games at least, everybody wants to be Swedish.
I sometimes free them anyway, and if they become Swedish I go through the insurrection-declare war-liberate cycle again.

Getting that liberator PR bounce is one of the ideas Eric said he was going to seriously consider for a future patch, IIRC.

If you liberate them then they become a free state. Most likely you won't be able to turn them into a protectorate because of a bug where the conquering power is not properly set as the owner of that minor. You can protectorize minors that you begin with at start, but anything you new you conquer can either be free or a wholly-owned province.

In the alternative, is there a way to give the province to another nation that I already have as a protectorate?
For instance, I could give Westphalia to Batavia which I have as a protectorate already.
I have looked for a way to give terrtory to a minor nation but have not seen any way to do it.

WHen you have the option to protecorate a minor country the game will prompt you to whom do you want to add the protectorate. Of course one option is the country itself. Another option is to attach ot to an already existing protecorate.
So, if Bavaria is crrently a protecorate and you conquer or coup Westphalia, when you have the option to protecorate Westphalia the game will ask you if you want to add Westphalia to the protectorate of Westphalia or Bavaria.

Is there any major advantage to having a protectorate rather than as part of your territory?

It is my understanding that the more terrotory you control the greater the waste in your resources. So too many provinces can have a negative impact.
To be certain of this I would have to read the manual though and I have that on my list. [;)]

In my current game, I am playing as France and Sweden conquered Freisland from my Batavian protectorate. When Sweden sued for peace, I demanded freisland back and now it is part of France. I would like to give it back to Batavia but cannot figure out if there is a way to do that.
I am going to try and liberate freisland and see what happens. I will report back on the results.

it has it's pro's and con's
they do not count towards your waste level
they produce there own troops (with in reason)
you only get half of what they make, where as if you owned it, you would get all of it
(Poland comes with 2 good armies, and will make many more troops, if you are it's protector, if you take it, you lose the Armies and lose any of the troops it may of made for you)
and you do not have to upgrade any of it, (or pay for the upgrade) it does it, itself (of course, normally not the way you would wish it to)
my current game I have as Protectorates, Bavaria, Batvaria, Poland, Piemount and Portugal and one of the NA coaster Provinces
(and for some reason, the area that should be Norway, I own Denmark and I own Finland, but for what ever reason, I am a Protector of Norway ???)

Another protectorate "con": they are easier to take from you (they can be insta-conquered vs occupied, usually)

Two things I would like to add.
1. When you attack a nuetral and conquer it you get the option to protecorate. But, when you conquer another country's protectorate you do not get the option to make it YOUR protecorate. OR if you have a minor country ceded to you in a treaty you do not get the option to protecorate. If you coup a minor country you do get to protecorate.
2. Although I cause insurrections regularly against other countries, I have yet to lose a protecorate by way of insurrection. So I disagre with jim that it is a "con". Other than French home provinces (which are exempt), I protectorate as many of the others as possible.

Actually what I was referring to was the fact that a protectorate (usually) gets instantly conquered from you right away, upon taking of its cities. Whoosh! Its gone. No formal ceding necessary. As opposed to a fully controlled province, which (usually) needs a surrender to actually transfer full ownership, via a ceding peace term in the surrender.

Well, I wasn't able to do that because Freisland does not appear as a separate country. I am guessing it is considered "Batavia" on the territory screen. As a result, I am unable to do anything with Freisland.
I will keep trying though.
