In the rules it says that units cannot attack or defend without supply. What happens to ground units without supply if they are attacked by ground units? What about if they are attacked only by air units? Thanks to anyone that can answer this.

Where does it say that a unit cannot defend without supply?

If out of supply, they will defend at a lesser capacity. Whats great about patch 1.087 is that you can now see a pop-up inside the combat results screen that breaks down all the penalties and bonuses that took place during that combat. Using this pop-up will teach you all you need to know without the need to look it up in the manual.

Well, depending on what you mean by that I may disagree. Not reading the manual is very likely to make for a worse player - so if you advocate not reading the manual at all I have to object. You may obviously have meant something much less radical in which case I probably concur.

Oh yes I do think reading the manual is important. Its just that once you have and are familiar with playing, you may still find yourself asking where that bonus is coming from. At least I have anyway. The new pop-up is great for reminding you what rule is causing the bonus or penalty.

Absolutely, I certainly concur about that.
Its also great at catching bugs I might add.

Sorry my mistake, the manual on page 89 says that "without supply, a unit cannot move or attack". I looked on page 66, 8.5.7 Combat Modifiers and it mentions that the evasion rating of a unsupplied defending unit is reduced by one. Strangely it also says that there is a +1 modification if the firing unit is unsupplied which seems to contradict page 89, i.e. unsupplied units cannot attack.

Remember, both the attackers and defenders fire during combat. Unsupplied defenders will fire at their attackers; those attackers receive a +1 to their evasion rating.

Actually, there are a couple cases where unsupplied units assist in an attack. Naval bombardment is one, and I have noticed the target had the +1evasion modifier. Also I believe that CAG riding on a carrier that attacks but does not have enough supply for the cag will be part of the attack but its targets have the +1 mod.
