Too small for a DD. I would bet on a MSW or PG.

EDIT: Strange - i was replying to a post that said it was a Momi class, but when i go back, there is no such post.

I dunno, it looks a bit short (for a Momi), but it could be the angle of the mystery photo...

I'll guess Nokaze.

Here's a pic of her...

Oh, good, the hallucinations aren't back again...

Actually, i think it was Sneer's "Minekaze class" post. i've noticed that it possible to *quickly* edit your own posts, and the forum software sometimes will not make note of it ...

Hey Feinder why not ask what the ship behind this one is??? The stack is easily seen. [:D]

What's funny is, I first thought the small stack behind it, was a maybe a third stack on the ship. I was validating the pic (found other pics of Thracian), and thought, "Hmmm. Maybe this one is another one that was mis-identified in the first place... What's up that third stack... Hm. Not a 3rd stack, must be something behind it...".

Not much on the Thracian, other than, "It was obsolete when the war began. It got captured by the Japanese. It miraculously survied the war. It was broken up in 1947."

Anybody got a ship's history on the Thracian? I'm not finding much...

How about one from one of my PBEMs?

7 Dec 41. am. Sitting in Hong Kong harbor when word is heard that war has broken out with the Japanese.
7 Dec 41. pm. Frantically steaming SW to escape to a safe haven.
8 Dec 41. am. Black cloud covering the sun? No, that's a swarm of Japanese planes. Few minutes later.... Down she goes with all hands.

i found something that said she grounded outside Hong Kong harbor, which is how she got captured.

EDIT: Found this, as well as a note that she was fitted out to be a minelayer (!!):
Navy: The Royal Navy
Type: Destroyer
Class: Admiralty S
Pennant: D 86
Built by: Hawthorn Leslie & Co. (Hebburn-on-Tyne, U.K.)
Ordered: Jun, 1917
Laid down: 10 Jan, 1918
Launched: 5 Mar, 1920
Commissioned: 21 Apr, 1920
Lost: 24 Dec, 1941

History: Completed by Sheerness Dockyard (Sheerness, U.K.)
HMS Thracian (Lt. Cdr. A.L. Pears, RN) ran aground at Hong Hong on 24 December 1941 and was captured by the Japanese. She was salvaged by the IJN, repaired and recommissioned on 25 November 1942 as Patrol Vessel No.101, then re-rated a training ship in March 1944, being attached to the torpedo school at Yokosuka. Recaptured in 1945, she was eventually broken up at Hong Kong post-war.

Any word on what happened to her? Did she form a division with the Stewart? Patrol ship 101 maybe?

from notes on the S-class:

These ships were completely outclassed by modern ships at the start of WW2.
Stronghold, Sturdy and Thracian were fitted as minelayers.

Thanet, Tenedos, Scout, Stronghold, Thracian and Sturdy sailed for the Far East in 1939 to form local defence flottilas at Hong Kong and Singapore. When the Second World War broke out Sturdy was on passage in the Mediterranean and was detained there. She returned home after the fall of France.
