Yeah WIG is the principle that the aircraft uses......"Wing In Ground" effect. IIRC it was first designed as a troop carrier.

Really? Always thought they were one and the same. Pretty sure the Ekronoplan was tested in the Caspian Sea...

Russians tested ekranoplans for 30 years and built over 10 different models.

Actually, it's not such a bad idea. Potentially a superfast hovercraft with great cargo capacity for transport or as a weapons base. Imagine a sea going transport traveling at 300+ knots. During my research on this one I encountered mention of US Plans for a heavy transport using this technology.
So let's not laugh too hard at the Russkies!
