I have moded Shinano slightly by increasing her group to 99 planes ala nick's mod, although i am concirned about the max sorties.

Does anyone know how many sorties she can launch or how you can check/modify this.

Thanks

Given her size, I'd say A LOT! More than the Zuikaku i'd say.

Think her standard airgroup is around 40 planes, not much use having 99 planes if she can only get one sortie off before she's out of ordanance.

Thanks for the reply.

If Shinano was turned into a regular carrier - she is not efficient for her size because of the battleship magazines - she could carry about 120 aircraft of which about 96 could operate. Andrew and I (independently) came up with a system of not counting the stored planes (which were counted in some previous mods, including CHS, but no more) - so in the next CHS and also in RHS Shinano should be rated at 96 planes. There is no problem with sortees. It is all electrons anyway.

Note, however, that Shinano was not intended to be a regular carrier. The version finally built had an air group of around 42-45 planes. I have interpreted her air group as 16 fighters (A6M5), 18 Dive bombers (D4Y2) and 9 Torpedo Bombers (B7A2) for a total of 43. This based on the compliments of planes in the unit formed for her, plus the way planes were organized at that time (16 fighters was the new fighter "unit" - and 9 remained the bomber "unit"). This was the second carrier design - the first one probably had no more than the fighter unit. Her intended role was "support aircraft carrier" and she was to carry many disassembled planes, much ordnance, and workshops to repair planes - to support a whole force of other carriers. Since the code does not permit this to occur, we decided to turn her into a "simple" carrier. Note that in the new CHS you get to choose if Shinano is completed as a battleship or a carrier. In RHS you get to choose as well - but by a different mechanism: if you play 41CV you get the carrier; if you play 41BB you get the battleship.

Then make her a "replenishment" carrier with air groups akin to the US and British replacement squadrons (VMR etc.). Or is this the part the code does not permit for Japanese airgroups [but it will certainly give you a spanking by Japanese fanboys if it is possible]

My sources listed intended group for her as 18xA7M 18xB7A 6xC6N + 5 reserve. It had capacity of 718 700 litres of fuel.

Thanks, i was aware of her history, plan was to make her more useful and cost effective to build. First time around i went the BB route, but if i have my facts right it would have taken the Japs a long time to produce enough armour plate to complete her(Around 45/46)? So it would have been more realistic to complete her as full cv, went for an airgorup of 99, 33 fighters, dive bombers and torp bombers.

Well actually it was heavily armoured: 200mm belt ; 100-200mm deck. So the armour was not a problem.

Hi,

Shinano has 513 aircraft ordnance [sorties] in stock scen 15 with cap of 48 a/c

if you want to increase/decrease the sorties you need to go into the editor / ship classes / slot for shinano / in the device table go to wpn slot 20 and changr the figure under Armor

note if the ship has an upgrade path you need to change them all to the new figure

also refresh the shipclass in the SHIPS database

cheers

Be aware too that she can't have an airgroup bigger than around 98-99

Went for 99, 3 groups of 33, fighter dive and torp.

Thanks.

you might want to double check that. I'm at work so can't verify but i think its 98. Check my mod.....that number's the max number. If you go over it, your airgroups will appear in game with a squadron size of 9 each.

You are correct it takes longer to finish as a BB than as a CV - but not that much longer. If done from scratch, intentionally, it takes 48 months to build a Yamato class BB, but only 42 months to complete her as a CV given the amount completed when the decision was made - not counting any suspensions or accelerations in either case. If one designed a carrier from scratch and never started it as a battleship it would build even faster - depending on various factors down to about 34 months for this hull.

She also cannot have more than four functional squadrons. Never mind Unryu's had five air units! We cannot do that. IF you go to five, you get a strange effect: all but 9 planes in all air units go into damaged status. If you go to six, nothing works at all.

This is correct - the same thing happens if you assign five squadrons.

I do not think more than 96 was possible on her hanger dimensions either.

I would think leaving her integral air groups total up to 46, while the ship has an overall capacity of 96 would be a good solution.

If the player wants extra's on board, they will probably have to use a capable rather than trained squadron, and, if I recall correctly, integral squadrons have some form of bonuses too.

By the time Shinano completes, Japan no longer used air groups for a ship. A carrier division got an entire air wing, more or less. This wing had a group for each plane type. Each group would have a squadron for each carrier in the division. If more planes or squadrons were needed for a particular ship, they would just be assigned.

Fair enough i'll knock a few planes off just to be on the safe side.

Is 99 aircraft an upper limit. I too have moded Shinano (and Midway) to 120 and 137 (Midway). I've also adjusted item 20 under weapons to increase sortie rates. However, after one game-day, both ships air wings place approximately 80% of the available aircraft in reserve.

Thanks
