A simple question on upgrades

During my campaign, I noticed all of my warships have an option "upgrade on 4/42" (for example) and a toggle yes/no. Being my first campaign, I haven't come across this yet.

What does this mean? I am playing the allies, do I have to get my ships back to San Fransisco in order to take advantage of this? Is it automatic? If I didn't get a ship back there at 4/42, will I be able to uprgrade later?

The manual only talks about upgrades in regards to converting ships...unless I am just missing it.

Thanks! Any help will be, well, helpful!

If the ship is disbanded in a port (any port) with a repair yard it will automatically upgrade. It will assume some points of sys damage as a result but is otherwise usable.

One thing to remember is that ships will not upgrade until their SYS damage is below a certain threshold - usually around 5. Once they get below that amount, they'll upgrade automatically as long as the upgrade is set to "on".

Big T,
There are 3 shipyards in India - Bombay, Columbo, and Diamond Harbor. There 3 shipyards in Oz/NZ - Melbourne, Sydney, and Auckland, There are 5 US - Pearl, Seattle, San Fran, LA, and San Diego. You will want to convert at least 20 7k AK's in SF to AR's and some to AD's and AS's. Since this takes 6 months to complete, you will want to get some started ASAP. These ships, especially the AR's significantly speed up reducing system damage on ships. If you don't have them, you will wait for what seems like forever before it get a ship down to below 5 sys damage. The large ships like CV's and BB's will go down very slowly without a AR in the port. Try to have 3 of them (AR, AD, AS) in the ports you use the most.
I usually do 40 AR's, 20 AD's, and 20 AS's ASAP.
