Off-map artillery

What is the secret in staying contact with off-map artillery? In a recent game I had 2 batterys of 105mm Italian guns (4 guns per battery), and for the 15 turns that the game lasted, I never had them in contact (except for the strike ordered in deployment phase).
When HQ or 2 FO's I had were in contact link I could get to the bombardment screen, but couldn't assign anything because it always said the guns were out of contact.
I just read that changing FO stance to defend would put the guns in contact with them, but this didn't seem to work in my test.
Is Artillery btr always off-map and Howitzer btr on map?
In the Italy vs Bulgaria game I dropped para troops on turn 0 and shot some of my opponents motorcyclists (whose icon looked a bit weird with only one bike as there was 10 men in the squad) on turn 1, yet he couldn't view the replay on his first turn. Is this a bug?
