Would it be possible to have starshatter support Damage maps.
That being another set of textures that go "underneath" the normal textures, complete with their own Illumination maps.
As damage is dealt to the ship, the damage textures slowly get revealed, thus if a ship gets pounded enough, the underlaying structure shows through, and glowing from melted metal and what not.

It is a good idea, but I can imagine it would be a total nightmare to program. Of course, in my mind, the damage map conforms to the areas that are actually being hit. It seems kind of weird if your rear facing engines look all trashed when it is your front end getting all the punches.
