I did search the manual and the forum. In the manual I found how they are created, but not how they are called. Am I missing something?

From the manual, I assume you know how to open the playbook and set up the four offensive and four defensive plays.

On offense, when your quarterback readies at the line, you send your players in motion with the 2 key, right mouse button, or 2nd button on the game pad. You call an audible by hitting the 3 key, center mouse button (if it is set up) or the third button on the game pad.

The defense is similar. Have fun!

UPDATE: OK, I tested it and figured it out (boy, would have been nice to have this in the manual [8|])

I select formation and then the play and press "select" with space bar or the "1" key (assuming keyboard). Once my QB sets in position I press "3", which I can tell was accepted because the camera angle shifts up slightly and the interface HUD clears. THEN I press keys "1", "2", "3" or "4" to selection one of the precanned audibles. And to answer my own question, no it doesn't matter if you are in the right formation because the team will shift to the proper formation. Then after the formation switches (if necessary) you press "1" or space bar to initiate the play... clear as day [;)]

I have verified this works on offense. However I cannot got audibles to work on defence, and yes I do have audibles selected in the playbook [;)]

I tried some more and still can't seem to get defensive audibles to take. Any ideas?
