Aircraft fragment

I have a problem with a B-17 fragment. I moved a B-17D squadron from the Phillipines to Darwin. 11 of the 12 planes moved to Darwin. The last plane was damaged so it had to be repaired before it could move. By the time I was able to get the last plane to Darwin the remaining portion of the squadron (11 planes) changed to B17E's. Now I have the main squadron of 11 planes as B17Es and 1 fragment squadron of B17Ds. I cannot combine them and I cannot change the B17Es back to Ds nor can I upgrade the fragment. How do I correct this problem? Or do I just wait until the B17D gets shot down?

Yeah, sorry. Unless you have another B17D squadron available to disband them into, I'm afraid that's it.

What version are you using?

IIRC In lastest version (1.6?), when a group upgrades, any fragments of the group are removed from map.
Need to check REAME for details

Perhaps this "removal" feature was part of the reason I lost all those squadrons after the air fragment FUBAR I sufferred.

Found it at last.

From release notes for 1.30:
14) The partial air group unit aircraft upgrade option has been removed from the interface and when an air group does upgrade, all partial units belonging to that group are immediately moved to the base where the group is located and combined. Any excess aircraft above maximum allowed for the unit are removed and placed into the pool.

Ron,
wasn't your problem that replacement fragments were showing up in Oz?
According to above, you could have upgraded the group in Auckland to something, and all those fragments would have gone away.
But then if you had the appropriate conditions to upgrade, then you could have taken replacements there.
Unless supply was below the 20K level, which caused replacements to show up in Oz. But then once supply reached 20k in Auckland, you could have upgrade the group to get rid of the replacements.

I just tried upgrading on that save you sent me. I had to turn PDU on though, but it did allowed me to downgrade those 0 plane groups, which then eliminated the fragments and put all the planes back in the parent group as damaged. And then I could upgrade back to P-39. Only group that does not work is the 39thFS since it still thinks it is crated on a "ship".

michaelm, that routine doesn't always work. I have seen a few cases of the parent upgrading and the fragment not. In all the cases I have had I had a way to merge the fragment with another parent unit. I do not have any saves for this. And they would have occured in one of the versions 1.6 - 1.795. I am learning about not letting any air unit be set for upgrade( more micromanaging ) [:)]

I have not noticed any problem with groups upgrading with any associated fragments automatically merging with the parent.
A pity you don't have a save.

Yeah, I was just thinking out loud as I am not aware of the new routine about eliminating excess fragments. Problem was the fragments were filling out and the parent units were emptying. Fragments won't let you ship them and empty parents can't be shipped either. I was stuck and had to do the disband dance and still ended up loosing a squadron permantly and three for 90 days.

The shipping thing is very frustrating. I have had a fragment created at SF when the( partially full) parent was on an AK. The only way to get them together again was to ship the partial parent back to SF, combine and then ship them back to Pago Pago. At least I caught it before they unloaded, who knows what would have happened. ( no saves available - note I pretty much quit worring about saves of problems since most of the ones I sent in the past were not useful )

You did not mention what version you had.
Do you still have a save of the turn they upgraded?
