wphex.dat editing

Actually, more correctly wpohex.dat, but they're basically the same file.

How the <expletive deleted> do you do it? I'm helping one of the folks on the WPO forum playtest a scenario he's made. He's made two new bases out in the middle of the sea, meant to represent commerce arriving from off-map, and there's trouble getting merchies and tankers to load at them.

I have a suspicion that this is caused by them being ocean hexes (as far as wpohex.dat is concerned), and since the concept of changing the wphex.dat file is heavily used in CHS, I thought I might seek some help from the team.

I hope you are talking about pwhex.dat.

If so, it is the wrong file.

You add a base in the wpl file - the location file - just using the database editor. It causes a flag graphic to be generated at the location. It is, however, good form to ALSO make an entry in the pwhex.dat file - putting the name and slot (line) number (from the location file) on the left side - Field C. The slot number also should go in Field D. I see no evidence this matters - but it is nice for anyone (including you) later. What DOES matter is to enter terrain type - or to change it - if required. For example, if you add an atol, tell this to the database under the terrain type column. There is a crib in the upper left corner of WITPExcel - if you look at the PQHex page. It translates all the codes for you. And it ALSO interprets them when you enter them - so you know if you got the right code. It prints their English meaning at the top of the page in the same column.

I KNOW THAT!!! I'm just not sure if you need to edit the pwhex.dat file AS WELL. Read the post before you open your mouth!

Yes
If you have created a new base on Ocean terrain, you will need to change the 'hex.dat' from 'ocean' to 'coastal' or 'atoll'. Otherwise you can't load troops, etc there, IIRC.

There is no simple editor for it. I think it is 'hacked' with a file hex editor.

Andrew B. knows how this file is structured.

WitPExcel has a fairly user-friendly editor for the pwhex data; certainly more simple to use than hacking with a hex editor.

Did I rub your feathers the wrong way?

I suggest a class in communications theory:

It is quite unlikely I replied if I didn't read your post. It is certain your query was not entirely clear. And an attempt to clarify the correct procedure is friendly, not hostile.

It is a violation of the terms of use of the board to flame. It is also a violation of the standards of civil intellectual discourse. Unless, somehow, you believe I am a special sub-human class of person, not diserving of the rights of other users, nor of the respect you afford to real humans,
I suggest a change in tone. It hardly is in your interest to discourage people from answering your questions (always accepting the possiblity that, in you mind, I might not be a people - but perhaps some sort of communist computer program worthy of insult?).

The good news is that you cannot ruffle my feathers. I assume perhaps you were irritated by something unrelated to me - or that you replied to fast without thinking about how I had, in fact, attempted to help you. I further assume from your five stars you have been around here for a long time, and for that reason are experienced and valuable. But don't do it again. Upset I am not. Tolerant of uncivil behavior I also am not.

A couple of restarts later, the transports seem to be loading fine. He's set them up to generate a few supplies and fuel every turn, which the Japanese player then has to transport to the Home Islands. Since there's no "real" bases there as such, it doesn't really matter if you can't unload anything there.

If nothing can unload to them, how to they get supplies (or resources) to be loaded? Are these resource centers?

Sorry, did not know as I have not used WitPExcel yet.
