I'm new to Modding

OK I've decided to do a MOD of scenario 145 (Nik Mod 5, ABs new standard map, May 42 Campaign).
As Japan I want to get the production to a state where a 'typical' Jap player would have changed things in a full campaign (no massive expansions). By that I mean:
1, Converted Nates and other 'useless' a/c factories to a better model
2, Converted engine factories (Nissan Hitachi etc) to Nakajima
3, Increased smaller Armament factories
4, Convert a small number AKs to ARs and MLEs (setting an arrival date to 180 days from 12/8/41).
Now I also want to bring forward the conversion of CS Chitose and Chiyoda to CVLs to 411231 (as a player would have done on 421231) - now the questions:
1, From the ship screen in the DB editor i've changed to ship class 560 and delay date to 420701 - is this corrrect / anything i've missed?
2, How do I change the organic airgroups from float planes to carrier aircraft correctly?
This confuses me [&:] I don't want to screw up the process whereby airgroups resize according to date.
your assistance would be appreciated
