The Aquitania

Somebody, I forgrt who; Don or Ron, or Viper, or Big B, whoever, requested an Aquitania. I lost the request file, so whoever you are, here she is. PM me and I will get you the .bmp file.

I had hoped to do her (pun not intended) in Standard Emergency Wartime, i.e. a 507a hull with 507c topsides, but her hull turned out more of a 507b. I'll try to fix this in the 'official' release, but in the meantime ...

Ciao. JWE

BTW, she's at 4.5 feet per bit, length; but the standard 4 feet per bit on the height. Some foreshortening, but not much. She was 901 feet overall! Bigger than a stretched Essex, and only 20 feet shorter than Montana! Wow! A monster.

I love the Aquitania. She's the only truly large liner we have in the game (at least through mid-42). At the moment she's rushing a whole RCT from SF to Noumea (there's really no other transports that can keep up with her, so I use her solo with heavy escort - though I try to keep her away from "C" class cruisers...).

Hi all,

We want the Queen's!!![:D][:D][:D]

With their speed they should operate alone (i.e. as it was historically)... imagine the grief of player who looses them to some well positioned Japanese submarine... [8D]

Hmmm, I can't help but wonder if the program would assign them an unrealistically low VP value...

I hadn't really thought about the Queens since they aren't in either the STD or CHS data set; but what the hey! modders want 'em, modders get 'em. I have to work on some other stuff for CHS first, but I'll fold 'em in somewhere and let you know when they are up.

There were a few other liners that operated in the Pac. Aquitania only made two trips between Pearl & SFO; spent most of her Pac time trooping AUS and NZ forces to the Med before being withdrawn for the Bolero program.

We had the West Point (about 730' and 24k), the Wakefield, Mount Vernon (about 700' and 21k), 4 Matson liners (Lurline, Mariposa, Matsonia (Malolo) and Monterey; 650' and 22k), an APL liner (Pres Coolidge; 650' and 20k; had a sister, the Pres Hoover, but she was lost off Taiwan in '37; we could pretend she wasn't though), and quite a few more in the under 600', 17k category.

I too think they should sail alone, or with a couple DDs. To get around the VP issue, I would give them an arbitrarily high capacity, so they can haul lots of troops, and make their cruising speed very close to their max. If the number of these vessels is limited, they will become so desirable to keep around that a player would be foolish indeed to risk them in sub infested waters, or use them for assault landings; anything other than high-speed troop buildup transportation to relatively secure rear-area bases.

It would really be nice to have those fast liners (with high troop capacity and high VP value) for emergency troop buildups!

BTW, since in WitP ship-to-ship refueling is done 100% of the time from any kind of ship to any kind of ship they would be used by players with heavy escort (and not alone)... [:D]

The reason why not risk losing her its her cargo. She can carrty entire brigade. Two well aimed torpedoes, and puff entire brigade dissapeared.

I'm standing by my comment that the Aquitania is the only truly large liner we have in the game. The Aquitania has a capacity of 12000, while the next largest class (the Wakefield, West Point and Mount Vernon) has a capacity of 7500. I was wrong in that they do have nearly her speed, but in being so much smaller do not seem to be nearly as valuable...

I'd love to see what the Queens would look like in our game, but since I do not believe that they ever served in the Pacific (it would be nice if someone proved that wrong) I'll have to live without them.

I just brought an entire USA regiment to Nome on Aquitania. Very handy indeed. Was a wee bit worried about icebergs until I came back to reality.

You are right, she was huge. 901' overall, while the West Point was only about 750' overall. I don't think the Queens ever served in Pac, but there are so many other 'what if?' mods available, why not put 'em in? I'll make up a Q as part of the 'official release' of the Allied AP/AK/Aux volumes.

BTW, for visionstealer, if you want one of the present ships, you can get them at http://witp.tylerroguedesigns.com/images/JWE/JWE.htm in the art file entitled US APs.zip at the bottom of the page. This was an early attempt of mine, so you will need to cut and paste, but the West Point, Wakefield, the Matsons and Coolidge are all in the box. Just be sure to remove the registration dot in the middle of the bottom hull edge before you paste the pix into a AnSide or AnShill background.

Ciao. JWE

I think Queen Mary made at least one war-time (post December 7, 1941) cruise in the Pacific. Came through the canal with US troops for Australia sometime prior to ramming the Curacao. And, of course, one or two trips from Australia to the Middle East between '39 and '41. But certainly not worth including her in the OOB.

Amazing how many rammings the liners were involved in. Duntroon is in CHS and she pranged USS Perkins I think. SS Awatea apparently did in USS Ingraham, not Chemung as originally thought. I remember reading that when Curacao was rammed the allied navies began allowing the big liners to run on their own rather than risk more collisions.

Didn't know that. I know Aquitania did the same kind of trooping stuff from Aus to the ME in '39 to '41, and Cunard says she made two voyages between Pearl & SFO while in the Pac. Do you know when those were? post 12/07/41?

WOW!

I find myself saying this over and over. I am in awe of you modders. Everytime I go away for a few weeks I come back and there is something amazing and new.

Is this beauty available at Spooky's or Rogues?

I just was reading about Aquitania making a run to reinforce Singapore when Japan had air superiority. Apparently she was too valuable to risk sending her all the way in so they offloaded her in Sumatra and let smaller ships take them the rest of the way. Also reading that Royal Sovereign escorted one of the last convoys to Singers. Anybody want to sent an R class BB into the same situation in the game?[X(]
