Hiya,
does it yield higher results against warships if you put 3 or 4 subs into a Wolfpack TF?
Let's call them Okami-Butais, using the Japanese word for "Wolf"...

multi sub TF's benefit from a greater chance of detecting/attacking a TF entering their hex but also suffer an enhanced chance of detection by ASW forces.
No more than 1 sub per sub TF will make an attack however per turn.

Keep your subs within patrol palnes radius will enhance detection even more.[:o]

What´s a good number for a Wolfpack? 3?

4 is probably a good number but i think you'll get better results using 1 sub per TF, particularily if playing IJN. IJN subs even under the new ASW rules tend to have a hard time of it once they are detected and assuming the detecting force has a good number of escorts.

Thanks Nikademus...
...so, I guess the Okami-Butais are dead as a concept... [:(] No Wolfpacks - just single Sub TFs for the IJN...
Grrr [:@] !!!
But there is an old Japanese concept anyway: Ippiki-Okami (Lone Wolf)
OK, then...

You can have your wolfpacks, just put one sub in each TF and then put a few of these single sub TFs in the same hex. Personally I don't see the point because this just gives the ASW side that many more chances to sink a sub with the same number of escorts.

Actually this is not true. The ASW TF will only attack one or at best 2 sub TFs in one turn. Where as each sub TF will get a chance to attack.
And if you look at how the Germans did their Wolf Pack attacks during the war, then you'll know that even though they got a pack into the area of a convoy the subs didn't actually talk to each other during the execution of the attack. So having multible single sub TFs in a hex is as close to having a historical Wolf Pack as your going to get.

Gentlemen,
I think I will go with option II - Single-sub-TFs forming Wolfpacks - and see how it goes.
Tks mucho

Got to say I think the new ASW reports are great.... damaged tubes, rattled bridge etc!
A question, is there an optimum height to attack subs from the air? I'm not having much success in a current set to off Cooktown, where the whole of the Jap sub force appears to be holding a convention!
