Correct Bombing Altitude

What is the correct bombing altitude for aircraft?
I thouhgt that I had read that the altitude that you select is the altitude at which aircraft approach the target then they manouver to the correct bombing altitude ie 200 ft (torpedo) or 2000 ft (bombing). I have been recently informed that the altitude that you set is in fact the attack altitude.
Could some one please clarify this for me.
Also any hints/tips on attack altitudes would be much appreciated (I would like to use my meagre resources to their best adavantage)
Tony

It's the one you select with the exception of Torp bombers. They'll drop down to around 200' to make their torp run. That's if you have them set for Naval Attack. Otherwise, it's whatever altitude you have them set for for all over attacks.

When attacking ships, anything 15,000 or above gets your planes into 9 plane attack groups. Something you want against CV TF. [:D] Anything less than 15,000 puts them into 4 plane attack groups. Good for attacks against transports and other smaller ships.
When doing level bombing against LCU's or bases, the altitude you set is the bombing level.
The altitude you set also impacts what amount of AA damage your planes receive before they attack. I like my planes between 6k to 10k on naval attack unless I am going after CV's and between 11k to 20k on level bombing, except agaisnt a heavily defended base hex and with low experience level of my bombers. Then I start higher and slowly lower the level.
You can set your bombers to "Supply Transport" and a destination of their home base to raise their experience from whatever to the 70's. Some consider it "gamey" but it helps the Allies while you build up your forces.
Hope this helps.

Apparently 6000 to 8000 feet due to the flak gap. I'm not a believer in the gap perce as I've seen planes blown out of the sky by flak at just about every altitude. I think the "gap" may be the result of a little reduced volume of fire or effectiveness due to the variety of flak and the corresponding historical maximums for some small calibre flak and minimums for medium and large calibre not overlapping completely. Depends on the performance of the weapons in use one would assume.

Any aircraft attacking with torpedoes will take AAA fire at the altitude you set and then again at 200' as they make their torpedo runs.
Any Dive Bombers and Fighter-Bombers (and Fighters making bombing attacks presumably) will take AAA fire at the altitude you set and then again at 2,000' as they make their bombing dives.
Level Bombers will take AAA fire and drop their bombs from the altitude you set.
In general, the higher the altitude the less effective AAA is and the less effective the bombing is. "Best Attack Altitudes" is a long running discussion and no one has made any conclusive arguments that I am aware of.

Yes, this is what I have learned from various historical references. It was not so much as a lack of flak, but more like a lack of effective flak.

Thanks for the info guys.
Also just noticed Zero's bombing from 200 ft with 50lb bombs. Is there a special mission for this (altitude set?) or is this just computer choice?

Its not possible to set aircraft to attack at 200'. Torpedo attacks are hard coded to occur at that altitude, its not something the player can set.
It IS possible to set aircraft to attack at 100' so they will strafe as well as try skip-bombing. Can you post that part of the combat report text file showing Zeroes attacking at 200'? It may be a bug.

Fighers and fighter bombers in bombing mode attack at 2000 feet unless set to 100feet in the menu (then they strafe)

He wrote two hundred feet, not two thousand. It could be a typo but only he can tell if it is.

I know what he wrote.
I'm thinking he may have misread the report and dropped a zero.

Which is why I asked him to post the combat report.

Sorry for the delay in responding fellas, I've not had computer time this weekend.
I think I may have made a mistake and missed the last zero, since my message they have again attacked this time at 2000 ft.
Sorry if i caused any confusion
