Could it be that you are comparing a Canadian dollar price tag (Matrix) with US dollars (Amazon)?
Edit: I see this has already been answered in the COG forum, never mind

It can happen when distribution deals get signed with somebody else. With standard 'box' releases the pattern is pretty much the same; the price takes a big nose dive after the first couple of months to shift the unsold copies and clear shelf and store space for new games.
There is no equivalent problem with direct download, and as the Matrix stuff doesn't date graphically in the way the big-selling RTS and FPS games do there is no need to drop the price in the same way, although they have dropped some a bit.
Even with boxed games, you can get great deals with shopping around. HPS and Shrapnel games in particular are both much more expensive direct than when bought from someone like NWS. I understand that buying direct puts much more money in the hands of the developers, but like most here I suspect, money isn't infinite and it would be hard to justify to Mrs Herts that I've spent 50 or 60% more than I had to. I get all my HPS games from NWS and only pre-ordered Dominions 3 from Shrapnel because of the (modest) discount and a suspicion the first print-run might sell out quickly.

Yep, picked up a copy of HTTR yesterday in Phoenix for $4.99 at GameSpot. I love the bargain bins (though Matrix games are a rare find there).
