problems running the game

hi, downloaded this old gem today; i have problems executing the program; i get the title picture, and that is it; no reaction to anything i do; the game just freezes and can only be ended via the task manager; seems to be a memory problem, but i am afraid my knowledge doesn't go far enough to solve it
any ideas?

Flanker, that was very helpful. I was able to get the game up and running in no time. My only problem is that there is no sound. I have a SB Live card and selected the sb16 selection in the d-fend box.

i'm pretty sure WiR has no sound - i have yet to hear any!
