As an old logistics dude, I'm impressed with the attention given to supply in COTA. If my understanding of your supply model is correct a unit that can't trace a supply route to it's SEP is going to run out of the important stuff, and not have the ability to fight. Is that correct? Gee the use of Partisans in future installments would make you think twice about leaving your MSR unprotected

At it's most simplistic yes. However, as in real life it's a more complex than that. Unit will carry their own first line of supplies. Usually this will allow units to survive for at least 24 hours when cut off. thereafter that things get very sad indeed unless they are resupplied. Normall a unit will draw on its Bde/Regt Base which in turn draws on its Div Base and so on up the chain. Eventually one of these bases will draw from a Supply Entry Point ( SEP ).

G'day there,
sorry didn't mean to simplify to the lowest denominator. I suppose a game that spans over 10 to 14 days max supply isn't as critical as it would over an extended period, first line and Bde Admin Bn stocks would just about cover the time most of COTA scenarios run

In scenarios of less than 48 hours, the impact of the supply system isn't that great on operations. (Except that arty ammo availability/usage is smoother than what it was in HTTR.)
However, in a 48 hour scenario given the shorter duration, one might be inclined to put everything into an ATTACK or DEFEND order which usually means going with ROF=HIGH. In that case, resupply on day #2 can be a very welcome event.

I'm very excited about the supply rules. For some reason, as I'm getting older the logistics models in games are becoming much more interesting. Games that don't model supplies well (especially operational and strategic level games) often lead to unrealistic situations.
Thanks Dave!

I don't want to make the game sound derivative, but is the workings of supply similar to the old Atomic games (Operation crusader)? I had always admired the workings of that title, and wondered why more of it's systems were not emulated by others (HPS - you listening?).

No ... in COTA it works. [;)]

Yea, I loved the games too ... but do you remember the dreaded black supply lines?
With COTA you get the supply lines showing the state of the supply path, but you get far more facts with regard to what is being supplied and from which supply unit and supply point. It really is very comprehensive with the great bonus of being able to ignore all the detail if you want. The only thing the player MUST do is to keep the lines open; all the rest is optional.
Cheers
Ray

With supply being the big feature in this outing, and supply not being " an issue" with regards the smaller scenarios (units take at least 24 hours of supply with them), what are the scenario ranges in terms of time?
How many scenarios are shipping with the game and how many are going to be directly affected by supply lines being cut
By that I mean cutting the supply line and that having a tactical effect in that the unit will run out of ammo/supplies thereby making your chances of over running it alot easier.

OK Billy, cop this. Attached is a copy of Annex F - Scenario Complexity Table. This list all the scenarios with a swag of stats on each and ranks them by complexity.

You must be sick of staring at the manual by now [:D]but shouldn't the 4th from the bottom be "Folgore"?[;)]
Really looking forward to this one,my Grandfather served in 26(NZ)Btn during all these campaigns(except when he was on Crete).I'll be keeping a very close eye on D Coy[:D]

Dave,
Very nice !
Now, if this info would be available, at least partially, in a sortable list when choosing a scenario, it would be much better.
Might be something to add to the whish list for the next game.
Cheers,
JeF.

Actually, that information came from a spreadsheet I had produced for Dave. It was first mentioned here:
tm.asp?m=923743
I am willing to make the XLS available for download if either Matrix or the Drop Zone would care to host it. Also, it should be noted that the unit counts are for the default reinforcement options.
As an XLS, it is very easy to sort and you can easily add other columns to hold such information as to whether you played the scenario, when, and/or your best score.
Dave,
Can Matrix host it or should I give the XLS to JeF for the Drop Zone? (I cannot attach a zip or XLS to a public forum message for hosting.)
Thanks.

If you did not lose my email address, you can just send it to me.
