I forgot about Run Silent Run Deep (I read it many, many, many years ago in high school). I still vote for Good Shepherd.

Thanks guys. The reason I started this thread was to get some ideas for summer reading material. You have given me things to think about.

Didn't Forrester write the Hornblower series?

Second that motion about "The Cruel Sea." One of the really great books about WWII at sea.

Here's a lesser known one... Alistair MacLean's "South by Java Head".

Douglas Reeman "A ship must die"

He also wrote Sink the Bismark which was fairly good.

He wrote numerous non-fiction naval books as well which, though well written, were a little dry and definately written for a different audience than his Hornblower series; Hornblower series being far more simple and easy to read than his non-fiction works.
