Hi Prez,

I assume it's becuase your current plane type can only see upgrades 2 further steps down the line IIRC.

For example an A6M2 can see A6M3a and A6M5 but NOT A7M

A6M5 should see it though.

yeah, its wierd what determines what can see the upgrades or not. I've noticed the effect as Speedy described, but also I've noticed that some groups can see more PDU options than others. for example my carrier based groups seem not to be able to see the a6m3 after they've upgraded to the a6m3a, but the land based groups seem to see it OK.

isnt that because one is a CV varient and the other a LB unit ?

Correct. The A6M3 is land based while the A6M3a is the carrier variant.

There are also some "historical upgrades" that are hard-coded for some squadrons.

Each plane type has a "generic" upgrade path. Like all P-36 can upgrade to P-40B which upgrade to B-40E etc.
Then, sometimes the historical squadron may have upgraded from P-40B to P-400s (not a part of the usual upgrade path). That historical switch over, is often included in the path, but only for that particular squadron.

Be advised, tha some paths will exclude other paths. Example...

There's a RAAF Empire (Patrol) squadron that can upgrade to Sutherland Flying boats (probably the default path). However, it also has the option to upgrade to C-47s (maybe a historical addition). If you upgrade to C-47s (I did on accident), the option to convert to Sutherlands (or even back to Empires), disappers.

Another example is the pre-war USAAC fighter squadrons (like the P-35s and P-26s). It's something to consider with "path" you want to send these squadrons down, as they convert. You have the option to send them down either the P-35 path, or the P-39 path. These two paths are available at first, but are exclusive of each other once the upgrade is made (the meet back up with P-38Gs). But once you choose a path, there's no going back (because you lack the P-26/P-35 replacements to recovert). Sure the P-35...P-40B...P-40E is the better plane. But if you don't convert any planes to P-39s, you'll over-tax your pools for -all- of the P-35/P-40B/P-40E. The P-39 isn't a great plane, but it is useful as escort (fodder), and it takes a little pressure off the P-40 pool.

Again, the P-39 path an P-35 path meet back up at P-38G. But if you've completely shied away from P-39s, you're probably seriously over-taxing your pools.

So...

P-26 and P-35 upgrade to EITHER

P-39...(P-400 option)...P-38G
or
P-36...P-40B...P-40E...P-38G

I expect the Japanese have similar constraints. You do have more flexability in your production, so it -may- not be that important to manage your fighter pools so closely. But the upgrade paths may reflect restrictions, similar to the USAAC paths.
