CHS: Need Advice

I'm dying to get into a CHS game. However with all the revisions coming out I'm a little unsure if I should start a game now or wait until version 2.0x comes out.

I have one of Andrew'S WiF style maps downloaded. I tried downloading the latest map data files from Andrew's site but received an error message and was unable to. I have folders full of various versions of CHS art, map and data files but have lost track of which ones will work with which. [&:]

So...as soon as the "right" CHS version comes along I'll just download everything again at one time to be sure it's all compatible. Problem is, I'm unsure of when this ideal version will appear (if it hasn't already). How is CHS looking these days? Should I take the plunge or should I wait until x, y or z problems get fixed? I have a PBEM game stopped that was stock map and Nik Mod converting over to CHS and a new CHS game awaiting the version to be 2.04. It seems that 2.03 is the latest, but Andrew is looking at a few things before releasing 2.04. Thus, when 2.04 comes out, I'm getting started. [&o][&o]

I followed the directions from this link to do my CHS install:

Version 2.04 was going to be released by now, but I have delayed it as I wanted to look at why Japanese losses to AA are so high at PH when using the scenario. The reason looks to be that the US Army LCUs now have a much higher complement of AA weapons - specifically AAMGs in 1941. These seem to be taking a large toll on the attacking Japanese aircraft.

I am still trying to decide what to do about this. One thing that strikes me as odd is that the ceilings of the AAMG weapons are quite high, up to 14,000 ft or so, which seems generous. But I should have a solution in the next day or two.

You don't need the separate map data files - they are included in the map packages. Those files (which I have yet to update - thus the broken links) are only required if you have "lost" one of your map data files somehow and want to replace it.

I don't think there will ever be an "ideal" version of CHS!

Here is the problem as I see it (excuse me for being presumptuous). I recall back in the old days (pre-Wang and word processors) my job required me to draft fairly lengthy loan agreements. My secretary would labor to type the agreements on a typewriter with carbon paper included. I would look over the document and make corrections in the structure (over and over again). Well, we have the same thing here. The minute a new version is out (and this goes for Standard, CHS, RHS, Pry, Nick etc, etc) someone wants something else included with a different configuration or sees a mistake that they should have seen 4 versions back.

We will never let up and its a wonder we haven't burned out our modders. No moral to the story and no solution recommended.

Thanks Andrew for all your dedication and to that of the whole CHS team. Other than inordinately high AA loses, are we looking at any other relatively "catastrophic" issues for CHS or are we mostly at the point where such and such plane has an altitude of 20,000 ft when it should be 21,000 feet and stuff like that? Also what sort of AA losses are the Japanese suffering at PH which they shouldn't? Is it very significant?

The differences are not as significant as I feared, so I will be releasing 2.04 very soon (as soon as I have time to do it).

And I only have one game going and Bill is away this weekend. Got a new install with the 6.2 map extended, just waiting for 2.4 CHS. I'm thinking of modding it to non-respawn status and lowering the pilot experience much more severely than the 5-10% done in 2.4. I was thinking perhaps a 25% drop across the board for replacements might make an impact on both ops losses (not high enough yet IMO) and in lowering A2A bloodiness. Given the fact that experience is so easily gained the drop should not be too severe as to nerf the game in any way. If PDUs are used, old airframes can be used as training squadrons as well.

You do have mail. I have noticed a few times that I did not get pop ups also. But I keep a link to my gmail account open and it pops up a notice for me. I do think game is on. [:D]

And an answer to friend Gary, just go for it. version 2.04 will be fine but there will always be some tweaks down the road. Just ignore them. [8D] I have a version 2.03 game going and I am going to start a 2.04 game when it is ready. Sometimes you just have to grab t[:D]hat brass ring.

Sounds like good advice. When 2.04 comes out I'll go ahead and start a game. The suspense is killing me anyway. [:)]
