Heyas all

I'm thinking of adding the I.A.R. 80 fighter to my WIR game. About 300 of them were built during the war starting in early 42 by Regia Romena in Rummania.

I want to make sure I get the stats right. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Here are the historical stats of the plane.

Armament: 2 x 20mm cannon and 4 x 14.7mm machine guns and 440lb(200kg) bomb load.

940hp radial engine giving it 317mph(510km/h) and had a range of 590 miles (950km)

If that armament was wing mounted, I'd say a 'Cannon' value of 14 (2*3 + 4*2) would not be far of. If the cannons had under 100 rounds each, a Cannon value of 13 would perhaps be better (2,5 per cannon). The plane sounds a bit slow for its time, and I have no idea about the maneuvrability, but I guess a Maneuver value of 19-20 (like the Bf-109E) would not be to far off from the truth.

Thank you for the response,Yogi.

From the limited info I've read on the plane it was pretty manuverable, but suffered from an underpowered engine. 940hp ick. It was a design from 1938 though that didn't go into production until 42. Impressive armament though.

Going to change the mixed fighters factory in Bucharest to it for 42. Going to set it to high cost to represent the limited number that were made from 42 to 44. Going to add the,Finns VL MYRSKY II for 44 to. :)

Heh so many planes I want to add for both sides I dont think the game can handle them all. :D

These stats actually look more like the IAR 81, which was basically a ground attack variant of the IAR 80, I believe. The IAR 80 was a pure fighter without bomb carry capability. Production was fairly evenly split between the 80 and 81, and treating them as the same plane makes sense in WIR. A limited number took part in the invasion of Russia in 1941, but the Rumanians couldn't get enough FN Browning machine guns, made in Belgium, until late 1941 to make more. Its engine was upgraded to a 1000+ hp model after the first 20 or so were built, but the weight also increased and so the speed stayed the same. A cannon rating of 13/14 is probably too high as many did not have a cannon and a number that did had a 13.7mm one that couldn't have been too effective, until a 20mm pair was used. Some links are: http://www.fortunecity.com/tattooine/farmer/120/iar.html, http://www.thehistorynet.com/WorldWarII/articles/05962_text.htm. I also once found an excellent site that discussed in great detail many of the various planes of the Axis and Soviets, including the IAR 80. Can't find it now, but it seemed to back up these links from what I remember it saying.

According to the historynet website, the IAR 80 was armed with 6 7.92mm (.303") FN Browning machine guns, and no cannons. This means that Cannon value should probable be 6.

Thank you for the info,Yogi, and RickyB! :)

I got the list of guns for it from,The Rand McNally Encyclopedia of Military Aircraft 1914 to 1980. Pretty old book I got around 1984. It only had a brief description of the plane and no info on combat service or varients. Thanks again guys.

Hi,

I like I lot airplanes. I own this wonderful encyclopaedia with all the birds built since its publishing date. (1981, Aerospace Publishing, London, translated to Spanish as "Historia Ilusrtada de la Aviación", 19 books)

I.A.R. 80 and I.A.R. 81.

On Summer '43, Rumanian fighter groups were positioned to defend Ploesti with AR 80 and Avia B 534.

December '43. LwKdo Süd Ost, with III/JG 77 defended Ploesti helped by Rumanian Jagdgruppren equiped with IAR 80 and Me-109.

March'44. Fortelor Aeriene Regal ale România had IAR 80 and Bf-109G-6 in the Escadrille 59, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66 deployed on Ploesti, Bucarest and Mamaia. Them, plus the Bulgarian 6.Polk (with a few Bf-109G-2 around Sofia) totaled 100-150 fighters.

Those airplanes look like those russian Lavochin La-9 / La-11. First flight, April 1939. All metal airplane, open cokpit, with a ski in the tail. Started delivery to FARR (Rumanian Air Forces) in Spring'40. I.A.R.81 was a dive bomber variant. Total production, both models: 436 units. In 1942, 4 Escadrille from Corpul I Aerian at Ucrania flew IAR 80. Next year, all IAR80 and IAR 81 were sent back to Rumania to defend it fom American heavy bombers.

In 1950, a few surviving IAR 80 were converted to trainers, adding a 2nd cockpit (IAR 80DC). In 1952, were retired.

Production:
50 IAR 80 fighter with 2xFN 7.92 MG

90 IAR 80A fighter with 6x7.92 MGs

+-110 IAR 80B with 4x7.92 MGs + 2x13.2 MGs

50 IAR 81, dive-bomber, 6x7.92 MGs, Bombs: 1x250Kg, 4x50Kg

29 IAR 81A, dive-bomber, 4x7.92 MGs + 2x13.2 MGs, Bombs: 1x250Kg, 4x50Kg

50 IAR 81B, long-range fighter, 2x20mm Guns + 4x7.92 MGs, 2 dropable fuel tanks underwings

+-60 IAR 81C, dive-bomber, 2x20mm Guns + 4x7.92 MGs, Bombs: 1x250Kg, 4x50Kg
