Well my all time favs in the PTO are these 3 beauties. I like the huge scope of WitP, but nothing can be compared to the nail biting tension of 5 minute turns.
As I saw that one game of SSG (Battles in Italy) is distributed by Matrix, I wonder if a tactical carrier ops game would be a buy for you? Or would a WitP engine based ETO naval game be more interesting?
Well I cant decide between the two.

That site is so full of "endorsements", my alarm bells are going off at a deafening volume. Might be just fine, but he should dial it down a bit.

Yep - and remember that SSG ain't what it used to be back in the old Ian Trout/Roger Keating days. Just take a look at what happened to RFTS...

Carriers at war.... ahhh the first version I played hours on hours on my C-64 and it was so moddable, one could create scenarios to play.
CAW 2 wasn't like the original in some ways, it was more graphical but seemed have less "oomph"

That one was a bit of a clusterf*ck after what I've heard (haven't played it myself)...

I never played CAW. Bought my 1st pc in 95' and never saw the game. How does it compare to Great Naval Battles series. GNB didn't really fit carrier op's.
Any info you guys have on CAW would by appreciated. Does the game play still hold up?
I found that link thru a google search after reading this thread. I'm willing to be the guinea pig with that site. It's only $31 thru paypal.

I have Complete Carriers at War, setup to run on DOSBox... I personally think it's too old now...

sadly...I have to agree with you. After WITP I don't even play PacWar anymore and that used to take up most of my play time.
I have to admit though CAW was the game that hooked me on my old Apple IIc god the hours I spent creating new scenarios...I even made a Russo Japanese War scenario...which was looking back at it pretty lame due to the fact the game was designed for air war and not the sea battles I was looking for. Same with Jutland

didnt SSI or some else put one along same lines or is CAW what I'm thinking about....you actually saw the strike move from hanger deck (after refuling etc.) to flight deck and then take off! Was a pretty neat game for its time........Anyone know where to get any of the V4V series, Operation Crusader or Stalingrad..........they are still pretty nice to play.

Does anyone knows whether GG/Matrix considers the revamp of Carrier Strike? PLeaseeeeee[&o][&o]
[dream mode on] We can have 15 mile hexes with the UI of WitP and we can insert the results of CV vs CV battles back to WitP. We could call it Carrier Battles Operation Tropic Storm [;)][:D] [dream mode off]

Npo good game is too old... people still play card games [:D]
But older games can be problemic more due to fancier graphic cards that don't deserve "fancy" monicker, they play new stuff good but can't handle older CGA, EGA and VGA graphics... a card for like $150 should run em one would think..
CAW II ran ok on my older pentium II 233 mhz with 8mb firegl pro 1000 video card under win95 and 98.
XP runs many dos games I have but not all and its where the 32mb all in wonder (hah) can't handle older graphics that its a wonderless card.

If your talking air war... humm your not talking of CAW but CAW II
CAW was a C-64/apple game when I had it, it had sea battles, ability to mod from scratch a mao, graphics weren't like in CAW II more like ship shaped Dots
that would go around.
If your talking of CAW where theres ship graphics thats CAW II a later REMAKE of the original CAW put out early 80's circa 81-83 I think.
CAW II just did not meet what the original was like,
I know having played both, CAW II was a graphical ship fight thing that was in ways more simple then original with just alot of eyecandy graphics..
"arcade game" came to my mind when I played CAW II vis a vis CAW

I think your talking of Carrier Strike where you controled
setting up CAP, strikes (and their bomb loads) , moved planes from hanger to arming and then a turn later they moved to deck to take off...
Carrier Strike was a companion to Pacific War (Original DOS version that brought about WITP) in a sense it was Pacific War but from the "deck" view vis a vis Pacwar's strategic whole overview.

You can find some V4V-Games in one bundle (Utah Beach, Velikiye Luki,Market Garden, Gold-Juno-Sword) here:
http://www.abandonia.com/games/en/646/VforVictory.htm
and Stalingrad from Avalon Hill here:
http://www.abandonia.com/games/848/WorldatWar-Stalingrad
You have to use DOS-Box for these games, but it is really easy to set up!
Have fun! [:)]
