XML Values for Weapons

Post by Der Oberst »

I'm writing a document with accompanying files to explain how (at least as I can figure) to build an offboard indirect fire unit. I can see the relationships between several files and then the relationships of the different values to some of the tables.

The properties I can't seem to correlate are found in this line: <ammunition destruction="4" stun="8" type="APHE"> they are destruction and stun (I understand "type" as the type of round used and that correlates to a table).

When I try to relate them I find the following: a rifle has a destruction factor of 8 and a stun of 16 - a 105mmL28 has a destruction of 4 and a stun of 8...... a 152mm piece has a destruction of 3 and a stun of 7 ... about the only thing I can see is bigger round smaller numbers... but I can't see a table they relate to...

Can anyone explain?

hmmm... not clear.

the killpower tables comment says:

"This table is used to determine the killpower of shells fired from vehicles or indirect kill artillary
including the machine gun kill from secondary weapons mounted on vehicles" so it is the right table to determine effect or impact of indirect arty ammunition.

However, there are D and S properites for a shell type of "HE", but none for any others.

The 105mmL28 has ammo types of APHE, HE, and HEAT with different destruction and stun values for HEAT round. So I can see the connection for HE round to the killpower table, but not the other types as the ammo types have no d or s values in the table.

Der Oberst,

If I'm understanding you correctly, you want to look at the relevant files in the /Guns sub-folder. The 105mmL28.xml file in that folder contains the Destruction and Stun ratings for that artillery piece when firing HE.

Indirect off-map support is always considered to be using HE ammunition. In order to build a new artillery unit, you need to create a file for its weapon in the /Guns folder, then a unit file for it in the /ArmouredUnits folder and then reference the "type" field name there in the scenario when you assign it an off-map position to fire from.

OK...well that's where it gets fuzzy as the guns file has properties for APHE and HEAT as well.

Now I understand the destruction figure (smaller number=more powerful) but does the stun number mean the same as in the manual? The die roll or higher needed for the piece to become stunned? If the piece is offboard how can this be as I don't think there is any counterbattery fire in the game ..... yet. [:)]

Yes, the lower the destruction number, the more damage a penetrating hit is likely to cause. The lower the Stun number, the more likely a hit from the shell (penetrating or not) is to stun the vehicle's crew. Even fired indirect, if a 105mm HE shell lands on a tank, it could stun it whether or not it penetrates.

Numbers above 10 require a "critical hit" to destroy or stun, so when you see a stun number of 16, that pretty much means it won't be stunning anything, but a stun number of 8 is going to stun on around 30% of hits, assuming no other modifiers.
