Freezing etc.

Hullo.

I just installed SP yesterday and updated it to the version 8.4. Couple of years ago I had an earlier version of the game installed, and it worked fine. But now I have three problems:

1. I can't hear the wonderful musics.
2. I have to quick start the game in order for it to work (I guess this is a common problem).
3. And the worst of all: while trying to play, the game makes my machine totally freeze all the time so I have to hard reset it.

I've went through documentations, but I can't find any solution. My computer fills the system requirements so I don't know what the problem is.

Anyone able and willing to help a poor blood-thirsty guy?

Hi and welcome Theokratie!

1. Have you checked settings in Preferences? There should be 'Soundtrack ON/OFF'.

2. Common problem. Replace the Desktop shortcut with Quick Start shortcut.

3. Have you shut down every background programs? Steel Panthers takes all the memory computer can give to it. So all else should be out of action while playing it. And I assume you have enough extra space in your hard drive?

Any help?

Also, never use the "Y" key to set the range for your units. Instant Freeze.

Let's see:

1. Yeah, I have checked the preferences.

2. Yeap, thanks.

3. And yes, I have shut down extra programs. But I only have about 1 GB free on my HD. Could that be the problem?

And no, it's not about the 'y' key.

1. Weird. Can you still hear the battle sounds or weapons?

3. Generally my computer warns if I go below 17% of free space in my HD's (I have few 20GB ones). And after that it starts to crash in times.

1. I can hear the weapons, but not the battle sounds. Note also that couple of years ago this same machine played both soundtracks fine.

3. Well, my machine is a relatively old laptop and it has a small HD, but in general it is quite reliable. And it used to be that also with SP, but now the game is practically unplayable.

Theo....from what your experiencing I would suspect you have a bad download, corrupt sounds, I played all versions (had 4 versions installed) on an old Win 95 with 2GB HD and 64 RAM and had no problems whatso ever.
Now have 8.403 enhanced on XPsp2 and still is chugging along. HTH

Nope, still no music -- and still constant freezing. So I guess it has something to do with my system (Win 2000, 600MHz, ~200 M RAM). I have no idea what it could be, though.

Win2000. Not a good platform for older games, I've heard. Lots of conflict problems and stuff...
