With the present railway network of Wir, I have found it possible although dangerous to hold the southern cities - Kharkov, Stalino, Dneoprovosk,through 1941 into 1942.
Now, if the Soviets had of been able to hold onto these cities, their production facilities would have grown and grown as they were a key centre of Soviet industry.
My point is therefore, why not get the computer or use some of the unused factory slots to add to the Russians industrial capability - new tank, aircraft, artillery factories in winter 1941/1942 and more later, so that it becomes very dangerous for the Germans not to try and take the south too and advantegeous to the Russians to try and hold it.
If the Germans do take it the balance would not be changed but if they do not, the Russian monster would be even bigger.
I think this would be an interesting and historically valid addition to wir and would help counter act Ric's worries about too strong a German player being created in the new coming version of wir.
Such a variation would not work if the Oddessa-Bucherest railway was added.

Nice idea, but I managed to destoy or at least do heavy damage to the Kharkov/Stalino factories in 41 with strategic bombing. But anyway I belive this future must be added to new wersion.

Was your defense of these cities done against a human or the computer?

against two humans.
Kiev can be held for a while with the river line and then a defence to try and hold kharkov.
Kharkov can be lost but the southern railway from Rostov to Dneipervosk can be held allowing the southern comfort.
It is also an excellent launching program for a Russian winter offensive
