Detail Battle Set Up

I am new to this game system (but very fond of it).
However, I have been noticing something - in most detailed battles I get into, the computer forces start off already on top of me - usually cavalry overrunning my artillery (and or supply) before I can give an order! That's about 75%-85% of the time.
Is this supposed to be this way? I mean, it is a bit disappointing to try to fight a 'realistic' Napoleonic battle when you have absolutely no chance to set up, or maneuver, or try to choose your ground...or anything all - when instead you seem to be constantly ambushed!
Any chance of adding some kind of "Set Up Phase" in a patch?

Are you using the latest patch? 1.2.18, available in the members area.
This was more of a problem in previous versions of the game, particularly in having your supply caissons overrun by enemy cavalry. I do not see this very often anymore.
However, what you describe does still happen on ocassion, and it's possible you simply had a run of bad set-up luck...?

Hi,
No, I am using patch 1.10 (truthfully - I didn't know about patch 1.2.18 - I've only had the game less than one week).
And yes, under patch 1.10 I get my supply wagons overrun by Cav before I get a chance to issue an order - about 80% of the time.
Sounds like this is a known problem that has been addressed in a Beta Patch?
I hope so - because beyond that problem, the game is terrific! A real keeper!

Yes, it was a problem in 1.10 - so much so that player complaints convinced the designer to address the issue and now supply caissons set up much further back from your line (sometimes, so far back it takes 3 or 4 turns to reach the front, but that is better than them setting up too close to the lines of battle).
You should see a decided difference once you download the 1.2.18 patch. FYI, you have to create a member acct to access the download, it is available to members only (its free, just have to set up the members acct).
Finally, an official version of the 1.2.18 patch is due out soon. I'm hoping this month, but we'll see [;)]

Ahhh, I see. Well then - I'll download the patch tonight [:)]
Being a Beta, is there anything to worry about (so far) with 1.2.18?

The latest beta patch is a vast improvement on 1.10 but it does contain an annoying error in level 1 developments where it awards 50 money instead of deducting 50. Hopefully this will be rectified in the official patch.

I'll have to keep an eye out for that.
I installed the Beta Patch - combat now works MUCH better!

There's one known (and irritating) bug in the 1.2.18 patch.
When you develop something in a province which starts at level 0 (banks, roads, whatever), there's now a $50 cost to the initial development.
BUT, some Nations (like Turkey, Russia, and England I think) actually get a $50 ADD to their treasury - the code is working in reverse [:D]
What I do if I'm playing Russia (which I do alot) is take the ill-gotten cash and subsidize some far-away place that I'll likely never ineteract with (say, Morocco) to dump the cash I shouldn't be getting for developing. Not an elegant solution but unless you dump the money somehow, it isn't really an accurate play.
