Some questions on the future of WIR

1. Will there be any new releases after 3.1? Or is 3.1 the last?
2. Is it possible for programmers outside Matrix (like me) to help Arnaud w/code?
Sorry if these questions have already been asked.

To answer questions nr 1 - I doubt very much that this is the last update. There seems to be new bugs to find all the time.

No there will be more. Arnaud is looking at this as a long term project, at least until Gary does WiRIII.

I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but the situation with WiR is somewhat complicated. Arnaud signed an NDA (NonDisclosure Agreement) to get the code, so for now only he can modify the source code. Whether others could too, well, it would have to be the original party (not Matrix) that gave Arnaud the code giving other people the same access as long as they sign an NDA too. The details are known only to Arnaud, and maybe Matrix, so I can't speak definitively.

I'd be willing to sign an NDA.

The code will not be released to anyone besides Arnaud.

I figured that, this is why I hack it instead. Not nearly as much fun though. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

Why is it the Computer Wargame programming community is so secretive. My company would fire people who tried so hard to hide their knowledge.

Its no different than other computer software markets, hiding knowledge is par for the course, just look at Microsoft. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
If we were talking about an old game like WiR, but one that is considered by all to be dead and buried, then why they are so obstinate about these things beats me. I think they're scared the open source community would make it better than it ever was fundamentally. Granted, the open source community isn't very big on graphics and all that jazz, but changes to the heart of the game engine, OOB, and other things are well within the open source community's ability.
This doesn't relate to WiR unfortunately. WiR has a remake on the way, so its not dead, and the company making WiRIII doesn't want to have an open source competitor to deal with.

um... ever asked why abandonware isn't liked by software vendors? Just for the same reasons and sorry-ass excuses. I also begged another company to let me debug their nearly 10 year old game and they didn't bother to reply the letter at all.
