Wow - I am playing a historical 1966 schedule. The amount of doubleheaders is unlike anything I could ever have imagined. Talk about real ironmen. And it's not like they had a day off before and after. Sometimes in a string of 7-9 games , you'll see two doubleheader dates. Ugh.... Poor dudes. [&o]

I laugh when I think about how a modern ballplayer would handle that strain. Physically he could do it. Mentally he'd break like a twig in a hurricane wind.

Hahaha....yeah alot of guys cant even play the dreaded "day game after a night game" [8|]

You think there are a lot of scheduled doubleheaders in 1966? Try 1943 and 1945 - now there's a lot of scheduled doubleheaders! (The most ever, in fact).

In 1966, there were a total of 45 scheduled doubleheaders in the NL and 74 in the AL, for a total of 119. The MLB schedule had a total of 1620 games on it back then, meaning games scheduled to be played as parts of doubleheaders comprised 14.7% of the schedule.

In 1943, there were 95 scheduled doubleheaders in the NL and 102 in the AL, for a total of 197. In 1945, there were 102 in the NL and 96 in the AL, or 198 overall.

Recall that in 1943 and 1945 the season was only 154 games long. Those scheduled doubleheaders comprised 394 and 396 games, respectively, in total; the MLB schedule only had a total of 1,232 games. That means 32% (almost one-third!) of the entire schedule was played as parts of a doubleheader. Basically, there was a doubleheader every Sunday throughout the season.

I love these.  With my 1946 Pirates, I keep a solid 4-man rotation, BUT, I need to get another guy in the bullpen for some spot starts.   The guys I have on the bench are all short-endurance set-up men and closers.  
 
The Sunday double-header is beautiful for the fans, and  I understand its attraction.  
 
For managers, it's a bit of a headache, but it also gives an opportunity for some of the bench players to get their turn in the field,  IF your team has good depth.  Helps minimize injuries to give tired starters a rest.
