Gulf Strike Victory Games

Does anyone have this game (any edition)? I had it and have long since lost it in between the Marine Corps, college, and grad school!

I remember a scenario of a Soviet invasion of Iran (1985) that was a lot of fun. I would like to translate this into a TOAW III scenario but I need the OOB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think I still have that in the back of my closet somewhere. It was one of the finest table-top boardgames ever done, in my opinion, but so large and unwieldy that I had very little opportunity to actually play it. Ironically, I remember thinking at the time (circa 1987) that it was exactly the sort of game that would be excellent on the computer.

I believe that the OOB was kind of thin (by TOAW standards), but it would definately be a good place to start. I'll see what I can find. Just let me know the best way to get it to you.

By the way, if design the scenario, I'll play whatever side you don't want.

Thanks, I have a map made.

You can email me at mjm800 @ yahoo (dot) com

The Soviet force in GS is huge and the NATO force is quite small, I plan on adding a few more divisions to the NATO side to balance the scenario.

Iraqi forces will be controlled by the Soviet player and Iran by the NATO player except for a small Iranian force around Bander-Abbas which would oppose any NATO landing.

That huge Soviet force would probably be harder to manage in TOAW, due to supply restrictions. As I recall, there were supply rules in GulfStrike, and they were pretty good, but they didn't include supply costs for movement, which will really hamper a Soviet army trying to cross Iran.

For the Iranians around Bandar Abbas, perhaps light infantry or guerilla units modeled on the Revolutionary Guards militia would work well.

That huge, use-the-entire-map and use-every-counter scenario in Gulf Strike was easily the best. I get you copies of whatever I can find. Let me know if you need any help (recognizing that I have zero experience in scenario design).

Yup, that is waht I was thinking light units nothing that would repel the landing force but they would cause some damage.

I want to put Iran in the proper context, they are not happy about a Russian invasion and an on going war with Iraq, but they are not about to invite the Great Satan into their land either. Therefore, I want any US/NATO incursion into Iran, Bandar Abbas being the most likey landing spot to be opposed.

I look forward to play testing this with you. [:)]

Two quick points...

1. There were several upgrades/addons to Gulf Strike witht he reflagging operation (Operation William Tell I think), Desert Shield & Desert Storm. Might want to see if you can get them on the after market. I have them but do not wish to part with them. I might be able to copy them for you, I'd have to look at the rules to see if they included an OOB.

2. Might want to look at Decision Games/S&T's Central Command for the situation around Bander Abbas. I remember playing that game on the USS Iwo Jima and likewise have a copy. Send me your address asandriik@bellsouth.net

Foo,

I also have the revised Desert Storm rules that Sandrik mentioned, so I will send you the OOB modifications from that as well. As soon as I can get them scanned, they will be in your email.

Thanks all for your willingness to help. I have the information that I needed. While going through some disks I found one that was labeled Gulf Strike Data, (hmm whatever could that be) and well what do you know there were all the scenarios and counter scans. I thought I lost that data two computers ago! [:D]

Anyway, I only need one more bit of information. How much time is one GS turn? I think it is two weeks but I am not 100% sure. I am making the game full day turns so I need to figure or what Turn 3 in GS equals in my TOAW game.

I'm glad you found your stuff, because I'm having a hell of a time tracking mine down. Not in the box I thought it was in (found Squad Leader instead), not in the next box I checked (that was Ambush and Wooden Ships & Iron Men). Kind of fun to break out all the old favorites, but still no Gulf Strike (yet).

As far as turn length is concerned, I seem to recall that a GS turn was only two days long. That means that in TOAW terms, the time/unit scale was somewhat messed up. Tricky to find the right balance for your conversion.

Glad to help. By the way, Avalon Hill did publish a computer game that I believe was based on the board game. It was for the old 64k Atari 800 & was pretty complex & large for its time. I have it somewhere & played it then & thought it was pretty good.I think a lot of game programing for the old 64k Atari & Commodore machines is a lot cleaner & more elegant than a lot of games today with their gigs of memory.I am not talking graphics but gameplay. They seem to have been able to do a lot more with a lot less.(SSG Battlefront series,War in Russia for Atari are just a couple of examples).l

Dr. Foo,

Any progress on your Gulf Strike conversion? I know its a long and difficult process, but I'm really looking forward to giving it a try.
