Try out the tech support forum for help. A lack of memory is a very common problem. The solution is to optimise your memory for the "dos box" under Windows, but this a really complicated issue, and a lot of folks are burned out trying to answer this question. The problem has a lot to do with your computer's hardware and OS configuration, making it difficult for others to help. This question really belongs on a FAQ. I've got more than 600kb free in a dos box, and yet I get a memory warning sometimes when trying to use the "review" function.

If you are running in NT then open the command prompt and start the game from there. It should also work on Win 98. Opening the game through the command prompt allows the game to run as if it was running on DOS with all it's quirks about memory. Let me know if it worked.

Hmmm, actually, it doesn't make a difference how you execute it, whether from a dos box (command promt), use the "run" command from the Start button(*), or run it from a shortcut (i.e. by clicking on a destop icon). In every case Win recognizes it as a DOS app by its ID (first 2 bytes in the program) and handles it appropriately.
(*) the run command does however mean you can avoid 2 copies of the command shell in memory, which *might* help if memory is tight.

So,guys, always the same problem!Still stuck with that damned memory size in Pacific war,and now also in Wir!Running it from the DOS box doesn't seem to change things.I think the only way is to try to augment the Dos-memory pack avaible.I got a topic running in PW forum and now i'm waiting for a step-by-step response/suggestion.Take a look at that
thanks for helping me

Why not just down-grade to a 233Mz machine with 64Mb of ram running Win95(like i run).
Never had ANY memory problems. Bigger is not always better. (not for this app anyway)
Or better still, buy one for $500 or so (Aus) and only run WiR on it. (people say to me "how can you get by with that machine" and i say,
"I, 'DO' more things on it in a week than you do in 3 months".)
When they ask me what i do on it they shut up.
It never gets turned off. (the machine)
Then again, i have no life.
Where can i get one?

You can also get a copy of Partition Magic, make a 128MB DOS partition and install Boot Manager (a really nice little IBM program that comes with PM). Boot Manager will allow you to switch from real DOS to winBLOWS every time you start the computer. The two OSes are on Different disk partitions so they can't mess each other up. I use it on most of my machines and if i was not able to solve the memory problem on my main machines, I could always boot DOS and run any of the old games. I am able to routinely able to get 620KB free at the DOS command line with real DOS (and QEMM)on a machine.
Hoepner, are you switching sides - going from a german panzer commander to a british airborne commander?

This is what I've wanted to do for years. I've got a spare computer in my closet, but I have no room! <img src="frown.gif" border="0">

As soon as I find mine, I'll let you know where I found it.

mmmmhh....I'm trying to understand all the suggestions i got from many people here and on the pacific war forum....but i have to say that it's not that easy to learn things when u do not know even the basis of DOS system.Anyway ,with your useful suggestions i'll keep tryin' cause these two games are a real great way to get some overview action when the inside-battle-point of view of spwaw makes u tired!
Mike:Urquhart was my old nick name i used in this forum before my pc blew up during a storm this summer. So that i decided to use it again some times......BTW:two great generals!!!!

You should try to make system disk for DOS and use it to boot your computer. Sure, you'll need to navigate through DOS, but game should work nicely. I have one system disk just for this purpose, and all DOS games that refused to work under the Win98/NT worked just fine...
That said, is there anyone there interested in campaign game '41, preferably to play Russian side?
