I'm very happy that MG is handling the remake of two of my favorite games, toaw and harpoon. I got the former last week and harpoon today. I always played the classic version through 2002 so this is a bit new and I expect I'll have questions as I get into it. I'm just poking around so far and noticed some sort of bug. When I exit, a blank crash h3 text file is created on my desktop and another harpoon folder with some empty sub-folders is created in the same "games" folder where I installed the game. It doesn't seem to affect anything and when I deleted the extra folder/sub-folders, a new set was created upon exit again.

Welcome aboard, Rich.

That does sound like a funky bug.  At least it doesn't affect your enjoyment of the game.

Looking forward to some MP action with you in the near future.  [8D]

I get the same extraneous Error reports. It doesn't seem to matter if I have the Error Trap activated or not in my Launcher, either.

Looks like a Vestigal function. However, it did catch a problem when I experienced CTD while testing a PlayersDB scen. [8D]

Wow.  Very nice of everybody to write so soon.  I'll copy and paste my post to the tech support.  It would be curious to know what this is.  Maybe I'll try to uninstall and then reinstall also.  That might help.
I never play multi, only solo.  One of the main reasons I got H3 instead of waiting for the new classic version is all the databases.  I always thought harpoon in ww2 would be really cool.  I think all those different databases add a whole lot to the game.

Save yourself the effort. The Crash Logs appear every time I have re-installed ANW. I've already done it a number of times. [8D]

Every database has its own flavour. You really owe it to yourself to give them all a whirl. They are certainly worthy of the effort. [8D]

HeHe,

The crash logs are indeed vestigal Hermann, left over from the development testing cycle of ANW. We used them to track down CTD bugs, and may still be useful for problem solving by the coders at AGSI, so I think they've been left intact.

One of the code guys will have to verify this, but the odd files popping up on the Desktop may be from the way you have arranged your folder hierarchy. I think that the Matrix folder which then has all the Harpoon folders and files has to be in the primary drive directory i.e. C:Matrix Games/Harpoon ANW...... The fact that you installed it to a "Games" folder may have something to do with the odd places these files are popping up in, but I'm only geussing here.

Well as long as I leave in that extra harpoon folder I don't get any more error reports and so far the game seems to work fine.  Just kind of odd.  This is really different from classic so over the next few days I'm going to do the tutorials to get used to the interface before tackling a real scenario.  It really seems like a very nice game.

I can now confirm this and thought I'd post to maybe help anyone else. I installed the beta patch and had more problems, finally uninstalled and reinstalled in the default folders. This solved the new problem and eliminated this problem also. The game seems to work better all the way around. Though I'm a bit leery now about reinstalling the patch.

Hey guys,

The game does remember the original directory you to installed the game to. For various reasons, the game will be tied to that directory for the duration of its use (like writing certain log files to that path). Also, the patch installer will use the original install directory and update whatever is in that. I'll see if we can improve this process as the installer should at the very least leave you with a working installation (even if it doesn't update).

Kind of against my better judgment, I installed the patch again but this time everything worked fine.  I've been going through the manual and tutorials and am very pleased with many of the interface improvements compared to the classic version that I'm so used to playing.  The zoom/tracking window, especially, is just excellent.  And the game seems to have much more depth.  Very nice.
