O man, I been jonesing since my apple 2+ to be able to play WIR someday and here it was all along and a free DL and updated to boot. O well..i got it runnning now and its GREAT! Last time I played this game they hadnt even invented optical hard drives yet[:D]. A few changes to the ruleset from what i remeber but im gettin back into it slowly. One thing that I no likey too much is how easily my corps get shatterd by blizzards. What i *was* expecting was I would take some modereatly heavy losses, give up some ground here and there, instead my corps get shattered left right and center. In the old days I would halt my offence, dig in and fortify for the weather and....well...try the weather the storm so to speak. Used to work reasonably well too, but it did cost time which slowed my advance. Now you can lose entire armies with ease. The winter was bad yes, but its effect was mainly to stall offensive operations, hinder movement, gimp equipment and air ops etc, and yes, you lose people in sub zero temps when there equiped for western european summers, but....this. I think its a little overboard. I was getting hit with odds that I could only match when i was useing say the 1st panzer army to finish off a few stray russions trapped behind my lines. Maybe there are tactics that can address the winter effects to the tolerable degree, if any ofyou have any tactics, dont be shy heh.
WiR > GGWaW, now all we needs is a UI update [;)]

welcome back!
i threw up to the top a couple articles which do contain hints on how to conduct a german winter defence. it does take a few games to perfect but once you master it you can put a world of hurt over a careless sov player!

Mmm looks like I missed that entire POV masquradeing as 'facts' about the 41-42 winter thread. O well, yes, I understand the principle behind your winter tactic. I will certainly give it a go. As you say it will a little hard to master as It compels us to spend the bulk of the good campain season just pushing ahead far enough so you can redeploy your entire line for the bad weather[:(]. really sucks in my current game too as I was able to secure Leningrad after a very short (and quite easy)seige. Not only that I had thrown up a good line that was perfect for a summer 42 jump off(at least in the northern sectors.....all this just in time for 4 or 5 back to back turns of blizzards. Grrrrr. Thats the other thing too. Im not sure how the weather is modeled anymore. Are blizzards random or do they run for a set number of turns before settling out[&:]. I saw someone mention that 3.2 does not have this current un-balanced blizzard rule and is therefore, somewhat more realistic as 3.3 rule set is now. My tactic had been to basically dig in and push the russians away from my lines at every opportunity while fully(more or less) dug in. That just does not work. Not only do my units shatter like the Italian army, the amout of avaible force they are able to project is for the most part only a faction of what it is normally. I understand this is meant to simulate harsh weather effects and I hardly disagree with that. Again, it feels like the whole shatter\reduction in combat effectiveness has been overdone. While going on the offence should be harsh news for the germans.(and it is) even adapting a defensive posture seems to have been more or less completly nullified..and then some.

Heinz,
Funny how the world works... I've been in the same gaming rut trying to find something with enough detail to be interesting, but high level enough to give what we do some meaning in the big picture. SC2, WAW, HOI2 just don't hit that sweet spot for me.
So I happened on WIR by accident and I'm excited to play it again... after all these years!
I see there is a mod for the game... would you guys consider it as a manditory load?
Let me know... I'm off to read up on the rules and docs that I've found, then kick the door in on 'Ol Mother Russia...
<best laid plans>
