Renumbering Formations

I have just recently started to assign units to other formations, having done that, there is a blank formation slot, that when I go to buy Auxilleries, they fall into my core in those slots that were vacated.

For Example, I buy a unit of 81 mm mortars, and a unit of 37mm AT guns.
I then buy a unit of half tracks to move both the mortars and the AT guns.
I assign a couple of half tracks to each, leaving a blank in my formation where the
half tracks were.

Labeling goes now.
unit F - 2 X 37 mm ATG with 2 X Half tracks.
unit G - 2 X 81 mm Mortars with 2 X Half tracks.
unit H - Blank, Was the 4 X Half tracks
unit I - Company HQ 2nd Infantry Company.

How do I relabel my core units so that the auxilleries do not end up in my core??
(First Auxillery will fall into unit H) and so on through my force

You can't. Best bet is to buy all the units you intend to "reassign" at the end of your regular force.

I try to avoid reassigning units to formations, as the more units under one commander, the less effective that commander may be when rallying. Too many units and he will probably fail to rally before getting all the sub-units rallied.

I also make it a habit to buy formations I intend to transfor in full to other formations last. Takes a little planning but saves some headaches later.

As for transfers, most mortor or gun sections are 2 units, adding 2 vehicles isnt really gonna overload the commander. And generally except for them being shelled, if someone shoots at the vehicles thay will probably die anyway.

Other wise, your right, you should try to keep formations as small as is reasonable for the mission. I generally only transfer vehicles to formations already in a company buy. The stand alone formations I buy transport for and leave them in their own formation.

Havent bought units lately but another potential problem is that independant formations have commanders that can be 1st Lts, if you transfer that command truck from formation to a formation with a Sgt or 2nd LT in command, the truck becomes the Platoon commander. At least that used to happen. Your atillery suddenly is commanded by a vehicle that is best command as armor.

That "command bug" is still there. I used to buy a single Jeep or Command Car to tote my FO around, but every time I reassigned the Jeep, it took command of the section.

Your start point:

unit F - 2 X 37 mm ATG.
unit G - 2 X 81 mm Mortars.
unit H - 4 X Half tracks
as H0 Half track
_ H1 Half track
_ H2 Half track
_ H3 Half track
Assign H3 and H2 in that order to Unit F
Delete what is left of unit H, the 2 half tracks H0 & H1.

Now buy 4 half trasks
And you will now have the following:
unit F - 2 X 37 mm ATG with 2 X Half tracks.
unit G - 2 X 81 mm Mortars.
unit H - 4 X Half tracks
as H0 Half track
_ H1 Half track
_ H2 Half track
_ H3 Half track
Assign H3 and H2 in that order to Unit G
Delete what is left of unit H, the 2 half tracks H0 & H1.

Now you will have the following:
unit F - 2 X 37 mm ATG with 2 X Half tracks.
unit G - 2 X 81 mm Mortars with 2 X Half tracks.

On your next buy you will get the following:
unit F - 2 X 37 mm ATG with 2 X Half tracks.
unit G - 2 X 81 mm Mortars with 2 X Half tracks.
unit H - Company HQ 2nd Infantry Company

By reassigning from the tail end you also skip out lots of the funny about command structures. IE don’t assign the x0 unit if possible.

I have not been able to reassign units during the buy phase, so I guess I will have to do the thing about figuring out what I am going to reassign, and then buy at the end of the list.
Still a little bit of a pain, but I can work around that.
As for the half track taking command, I put it with the AT guns, as the officer does not affect the guns to much, and put the other two in with the mortars, leaving the mortars in charge there.
