Hans - great post!

Got one question....when a CV receives replacement planes from a repl TF CVE, shouldn't they also come with pilots?

I only ask as I just had a replacement TF CVE provide about 5 F6Fs to Enterprise, but just the planes, no pilots.

May Jpas CVEs act in that role too? It will increase their utility a lot.

Thanks

Sorry for the late reply. That's a very good question. I always assumed both plane and pilot transferred. Although I have not monitored it closely, I don't recall any pilot shortages on combat CVs following transfers and I do consistently see shortages of pilots on the replenishment CVEs.

I typically try to pull pilots to the reserve squadrons from reserve rather than replacement.

Cannot recall any specific instances where only planes transferred.

Thanks Hans. I assumed planes and pilots would transfer together - but definitely didn't happen in my Big E example. Perhaps it was due to that the "threshold" wasn't reached in needed pilots - Enterprise still had 45 fighter pilots avail. I'm sure I'll have plenty of further losses to test how this works in the coming turns!

But I'm certainly rethinking having a full pilot compliment on the replenishment CVEs if there aren't needed!

Just tell us how the pilots that left their aircraft on your carrier walked back to the CVE ....

Actually BB, this isn't too far off...[:)]

That was one of the uses of the TBFs - replacement planes would be flown to the CVs, then any unneeded pilots would cram into the TBF for a ferry trip back to the CVE!

But the rub is that the TBF can't land on the overstuffed CVE unless enough planes ferried out to CVs to reduce the overstack to allow flight ops.

Curious, why have DDs with the CvEs when DEs are what most use to escort the CVEs?
God made man, but Sam Colt made them equal.

I am using exactly what was used historically, a combination of DDs and DEs.

I typically equip a CVE division of 8 CVEs with 4 fletchers and 4-6-8 DEs (numbers increasing as totals of DEs increase)

If you recall the famous Battle off Samar (The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors) it was both fletcher DDs and DEs that were escorting the Taffys and took on BBs and CAs.

The Johnston, Hoel and Heer IIRC were all Fletcher class DDs.
